Oh man I feel you! My mother in law is similar. Most of my marriage we lived in Florida but recently moved to stl where wife’s family lives and her mother seems to always be wanting to come over- either calls ahead or not. Never called me to ask by the way, when she does there are days where she stayed for 3 days straight! Meanwhile she lives 15 min away!!! She uses every dish she can find and leaves them wherever she stands... for some odd reason I noticed and find it super annoying that every time she comes over she’s hungry and has to be fed or orders take out- that I end up paying for... I think that’s just the cost of marriage. Not all of us get lucky to have cool In-laws .

If she’s the one cleaning who cares? Been married 12yrs and I love my MIL and she likes me more then her own daughter. She cooks for me and used to clean our house when they lived with us briefly, never bothered me as she would never go into our bedroom. The rest of the house I never cared. More she cleans means less I have too. I am originally from Europe and guests to us mean everything, like someone said you would roll out the red carpet out for them. So when people would announce they would stop by there would be cakes and stuff made all day just for them. I think you are over thinking the situation.

Early in my marriage, I noticed that my MIL stopped to wash a dirty dish that someone left in our kitchen sink right after we bought our house. On her next visit, I put two dirty dishes in the sink. After a year, we could pile an entire week's worth of dishes, pots, pans, etc into the sink, and they would all get washed any time they came to visit. Keep in mind that we have a perfectly good Bosch dishwasher that we use all the time, but keep dirty dishes around when the in-laws are coming so that my MIL feels like she is helping us out.

Back in the beginning, I would go outside in the morning before they arrived and mow the lawn. After figuring the dish thing out, I intentionally mowed crooked lines and missed big patches of grass one morning. My FIL took the lawnmower out and proceeded to mow the spots that I missed. You already know where this is going by now, and I want to make it clear that I was nice enough to buy a lawn tractor because I felt guilty. Mowing the lawn makes my FIL feel like he's helping out.

Is that a leaf that I see hanging out of the gutter? I think that you can see where this is going.....
that's the way to do it!

i also choose the car(as in x5) and take her opinion on colour and she says grey and i agree and she gave me £10k as a gift towards buying it! Pretty much same arrangement for all car purchases.

That made me laugh. It wasn't my biological mother, but maybe I've read too many "dear abby"s in the newspaper.

Also OP, wear nothing but a thong when nobody else is present except for your wife and MIL.

That’ll teach her.

Aren't flowers and chocolates more appropriate for Mothers Day in May than a day focused on women's rights and anti-sexism (something I learned by googling "women's day" since I never heard of such a thing)? Don't get me wrong - I do think it would be amusing to see someone walk up to a woman demonstrating for women's rights on Women's Day, handing her some flowers or chocolate and saying "here you go sweetheart".

Atta boy. Give those Italian girls some special love on Women's Day, dinonz. Be authentic in your love, though. They're a little crazy, and more sensitive than they would have you believe. Don't try a cheap leather balm or Walmart gas, or those doors will turn into guillotines. Having your noggin rolling down the shoulder of the road is no way to find out you fucked up.

Basically men should not care about the house and it is very unattractive that I care where certain things are. Her mother should be able to do what she wants and we should not bring this up to her because it will hurt her mother's feelings.
Sorry didn't read all replies so maybe it was answered. However I'm confused, if it's not a mans job, why is she telling you to clean and shit? My mother in law likes to boss people around. She doesn't do it to me because from the start I just didn't listen to her. Unfortunately other people in the family do whatever she says then get pissed off about it.

That being said if she wants to come over and do the dishes, fold laundry, put shit away etc then by all means go right ahead. As long as she doesn't touch my office, garage or any of my shit I really don't care and she has stayed over and helped my gf with stuff. I don't give a shit. So I guess it depends on what specifically she was moving. Although the telling me to do shit wont fly.

OP this has done multitudes for me in past lives:

Make the devil of a woman a french martini or whatever her favorite drink is. When blending, throw one Carolina reaper in the blender. This should fix everything or at the least get conversations flowing.....
