BTW, my 2015 Model S had a sunroof. I never had a problem with it, however problems were widely reported. Instead of Musk trying to solve a quality issue, he eliminated the sunroof.
It's exactly because the battery pack weighs so much that they have to squeeze weight savings elsewhere. That requires making some difficult choices. It's also likely why we don't have grab handles. At Tesla, engineers must eliminate 2-3 oz of weight for every oz they add to the car or something along those lines. Weight savings is a big push with these companies.

The heaviest lift for EVs (no pun) is accelerating the car's mass. Less mass means faster 0-60 times, greater efficiency, less rolling resistance, and longer range.

Nomo - I almost always agree with you, but this is one of those rare exceptions.

I suspect the primary reason we do not see opening sunroofs in EVs, generally, is for weight savings. Those sunroof mechanisms add quite a bit of weight that the glass roofs lack. The glass roofs sans opening sunroofs also allow for more headroom without an opening mechanism likely taking up some of that space.
That Macan has one too.

There are plenty of areas to save weight on these massively heavy EVs.

On the other hand, these are so heavy, what’s another 50 lbs?

I’d be surprised if the glass roof doesn’t weigh more than a steel roof with a ‘normal’ sunroof tbh.

Do the people worrying about exorbitant glass roof replacement costs not have this?
You still have to pay the deductible for your comprehensive. I set mine at $2500.

I do have an additional $0 deductible glass coverage for my iX only. It covers all safety glass on a vehicle including the roof. I read through the policy and it didn’t have any exclusions for sun or Panoramic glass roofs. Some insurers exclude roof glass for glass coverage policies. Check with your insurer.

I had a 2014 SQ5 which I ordered without sunroof. The same exact car with sunroof was about 100 kilos heavier.

Every little bit counts. Want the same interior headroom as a glass roof but with a traditional opening sunroof? You'll have to design your vehicle to be 2" taller. That change itself will add weight, plus you've increased the surface area of your aerodynamic profile, reducing range even more.

It's really no surprise that the more traditional looking an EV appears, the less range and efficiency it has.

If the concern is so much aerodynamics then forget tall suv shapes with blunt front ends

All the more reason to offer the iX at 10k cheaper (hell...even 5k cheaper) but with the reduced weight and increased structural stability that comes with a regular metal roof.

State Farm here in KS doesn’t offer a Glass breakage rider, which is ridiculous, but that’s the reason I have set $500 as my Comprehensive deductible. If they did, I’d be around your limit for sure.
