I got one! - now a question on battery life

Loving it so far. My wife calls it a "clown car." LOL. Thank you to all who commented.

My question is about battery capacity loss over the 3 year lease. I live in Arizona and park outside at work...unavoidable 100+ degrees. I have read that reduces capacity--any idea how much I can expect?

I have also read never to charge to 100%, but I see no way to set that...am I supposed to run out and unplug? That stinks. I've also read that charging to 100% is fine, just not letting it sit at 100%. Any thoughts?

Any real-world Arizonans who park in the heat of the day at home or at work have results he or she would share?

Thanks all!

I charge to 100% all the time and don't think twice about that. BMW have parameters in place to keep the battery from charging below a certain threshold and above. The batteries are warranted for 10 years and anything below 75% state of charge is replaced if I remember right.

Also I've heard they have a usable life of over 20 years and even at that mark they would be around 75% charge after that stretch.. Though that was some time ago so please someone if theirs new info please re inform!

In the summer I get an average of 90 to 100 miles per charge in the winter I see 60 to 50 miles depending on frigid temps. Below 0 I've seen as bad as 38 miles with 68 degrees on the knob.

So I've been getting 75 miles as my range when charged but today it reads 65. I'm wondering if that's because of the rolling calculation of how I was driving. The day before I drove without heat and such but today I did. The range usually is pretty darn accurate so I'm concerned I somehow lost 10 miles of range. Given that it's rated at 80 miles, I was happy with 75, but 65 seems too low.

Thanks for info on the batteries.

It's all based on how you drive the car and I believe it calculates the last 18 miles. Even though it shows 65, it's a guesstimate. You can exceed the guesstimate if you don't use as much heat or if you reduce a heavy foot.

If you drove with the heat on today, then the range will drop accordingly. Turn the heat off and watch the range jump back up.

So when I got in the car, the range jumped up, back to 76. So all seems well. Hopefully spending days in the hot sun won't hose it.

Congrats on the new i3! How is it optioned out, lease or buy and BEV or Rex?

Mileage estimate is based on how the car is previously driven, so no worries.

Most of the time I charge the car to 100%. Not worried about the battery life. I was told that the battery doesn't like to be fast charged all the time.

Also worth noting that I end up driving in regular comfort mode infrequently and do switch to Eco Pro most of the time where AC still works if needed. If I don't need the AC then it's Eco Pro +. Range increases noticeably.

It doesn't take long to get used to not having to push the brake pedal frequently, does it? Car decelerates so effectively when letting off the gas.

Again congrats and happy electron motoring!

Very easy to get used to. I like zooming too, so that's my own fault if I lose miles.

It's really hard to switch between the i3 and 435. LOL totally different!

Congrats on your i3.

Just cycling the battery through charge/discharge cycles will gradually decrease the battery capacity.
Very gradually.
Somewhere on the order of ~8% over the course of 1000 recharge cycles:

You can NOT charge the battery to 100% of its capacity.
The battery capacity is actually 22KWh, but only 18.8KWh of it is available for daily use and charging, regardless of what your charge indicator is showing (18.8KWh charge is displayed as 100%).
The rest is reserved to avoid full charge/discharge cycles, so charging to 100% of displayed 18.8KWh capacity is perfectly fine.

Have fun with your new toy!
