I'm not a prticular fan of drag races. But one thing I've noticed with pretty much all I've seen that involved an i8, is how quickly it's out of the blocks. It's a beautiful thing to see the electric drivetrain kick in instantly while all the ICE cars are still getting over clutch slip / torque converter mushiness.

Conspiracy theorists may say the i8 gets an early start each time.

Not much into boy-racer drag stripping myself (definitely not into it on public roads as it's an invitation for something mindless and regrettable to happen) but was curious as to the i8"s launch control times against some other European ICE sports cars. It was clearly noticeable on several 0-60 runs that the i8 is quicker off the line but after reaching 50-60 mph, the ICEs start to gain on the i8 and then slowly creep past it.

You'd have to be in a pretty darn quick car to catch up to an i8 once it's ahead a little. Doesn't happen too often in real life. So far, I've pulled away from everything chasing me on the Autobahn.

I ran the i8 against a 458 Italia.

I'm guessing that didn't last long. I love my car but it is no match for a 458 with equal drivers. Not even close.

A Challenger Hellcat (in puke green) wanted to race at a stop light. Guess what happened

Did you have to use launch control?

One thing I have to say is: the Americans are better at coming up with names for their cars. I mean compare i8, Golf, MR2, NSX to Challenger Hellcat, The Judge, Cobra, .... Too bad it's mostly marketing and not enough substance.

You're right. But the i8 consistently came out faster off the line during the three runs on relatively flat terrain (I drove the i8 for the first two runs then switched places). Despite the i8 doing 3.9 to 4.1 seconds 0-60 with launch control, at roughly 50 mph the 458 gets into its stride and starts passing the i8.

I can see that an aerodynamically light four wheel drive chassis coupled with two motors and an engine can definitely create surprising situation for some muscle cars on short sprints, aside form being at the gas pump.
