Beginning to question the validity of my correlation theory: higher charge is achieved by higher ambient temperature. Did a quick early morning run with the i8 and proceeded to recharge car thereafter. As noted in the snapshot, e-charge allowed for 20 mile charge. Ambient temperaturein garage at 10:32 AM was 68°F or 20°C.

I am wondering whether the extended capacity and range has less to do with the ambient temperature of the garage, where the charge occurs. Specifically, when the garage temp. is between 65-70°F, the charging yields a battery capacity range of 17-18 miles. However, this morning's charge produced an electric range of 20 miles despite a garage temp of 68°F. So I'm guessing that the extended range has less to do with the ambient temp. and more to do with the temp. near or around the immediate periphery of the battery cells. The range shown by the car is based on how it was previously driven and is not necessarily accurate. I've been able to coast down the mountain next to my house and then show 29 miles range. Once I started driving it snapped back to reality.

People seem to quickly forget how unreliable and easily manipulated the range readings are on ICE cars, and now expect the absolute truth from an e-range reading. On a normal car, get the tank down to the last 20 miles, and then try cruising through a city at night @ 35 mph vs. racing down an Interstate at 90. The difference in range is huge. So why wouldn't it be similar in e-drive? |

Anyway, this thread is supposed to be about data. So here we go: 37km / 23 mi fully electric. If you can drive at a relatively constant low-ish speed (city speed) without interruptions like stop lights or traffic, this is easy.

My car doesn't seem to be able to display more than a 14-15 mile range on a full charge after 1 month of ownership and 1000+ miles. I charge it every night as I like to use eDrive for all my short trips within my neighborhood. Doesn't matter how conservative I am with my driving I can't seem to get it to display more than the 14-15 mile range in EcoPRO. Any tips?

1) Set the car to charge/precondition THREE HOURS or more before you leave from an L2. 2) Ignore the estimated range, reset the trip information in center display. 3) Turn off AC, put car in eco pro mode, try driving on flat terrain with very gentle acceleration and prevent as much stopping as possible (even Regen is only 30-40% efficient). If you do all of the above you should see somewhere from 17-20 miles before the low SOC will kick the engine on. Curious have you had other electric cars? |

Your car will only show more range once you've actually successfully driven that longer range. |

Typical Range: 14-15 miles after overnight charge. Typical conditions. HOT...aircon needed nearly all the time!!
I had the vehicle on the 120v charger for the 4 days I was traveling this week and finally drove the car at the end of the fourth day. The range said 14 miles and increased to 16 miles as soon as I turned off the aircon since it was relatively cool (80F). Here is the kicker. I drove 3 miles in eco-mode and the range didn't budge. It finally started declining at the normal use rate shortly, thereafter. Question: Has a longer, uninterrupted charging time resulted in better range for anyone else? P.S. I understand the basic physics and chemistry of Li-ion batteries. |

Longer charging times don't make any difference. Preconditioning does if you use the aircon. I live in the mountains and when I leave my house in either direction I'm faced with hills, and like the kid who walked to school in the snow, uphill both ways, since I live in a valley I have to go uphill, both ways when I leave my house. The hills are real mileage killers. But I once got 21.7 miles on electric only. I wrote about it on Easter Sunday.

Once you realize how to drive very efficiently using all the information and the "stress" of EVs then you find same techniques apply to ICE vehicles to. |

This weekend I was charging my car and had a power outage in mid charge. After I plugged it back in I only had 13 miles charge after completion for the first time. Usually had 14-15. Just wondering if the interruption caused the difference. Garage was about 80 degrees.

I had a breaker trip about halfway through the process at one time and simply experienced an interruption. Once I reset the breaker, the charging continued as normal and gave me the usual range...14-15 miles at that point. |

Drive it to learn your actual range. I once got my car to say that my range was 29 miles on electric. In actuality I got about 16. (I coasted a lot of hills to get the displayed range that high.)
