Hey I bought this car solely to save money! If I can drive 20 miles every day in all electric I can save $2 per day, and the car will pay for itself in 75,000 days. I am investing into the future, taking the long view. Yeah!

Ok...I took the M6 out this morning to the coffee shop for a proper thrashing and returned to get the i8 for my lunch appointment and decided to have a proper measurement of my purely electric range. Here are the results:

I did not precondition. Garage Temp, 78F. Ambient Temp 85F. I unplugged from the umbilical and started the car. At this point the range was 15 miles.

I backed out of the garage, down the driveway, and onto the street. A total distance of 75 feet. I engaged drive and immediately went to eco-mode.

I drove off at a reasonable pace keeping the power level at 60%-70% of available eco-mode power. To make a long story short, in mixed driving with about 65% on the interstate and never over 74 mph as well as judicious use of the accelerator, I achieved 23 miles when the range meter hit zero. This included regeneration from coasting and braking but the ICE was not started. I drove another 100 meters to a fuel station and filled the car in order to get a good reading from the App.

More Data: 4.1kW/H/mi expended for the 23 mile drive.

I will take this any day of the week!!!

For those who have done this, please share your methodology for the measurement. I would be extremely interested in developing a consistent methodology.

Great Job BMW!!

That's the ticket! If our "old" normal cars only held a gallon of gas, we would have learned to drive carefully and stretch that out a long time ago. But with 15 gallons in the tank, you just worry less. Just like we wouldn't be having this discussion here if we had 15 i8 batteries installed - without the added weight.

I'm not certain but I am really pleased about the performance. It is much better than I expected based on the EPA rating and anecdotal information in the press.

I think pretty much, yes. I've done 37km, which is also 23mi (post #28 in this thread). That's the most I could get so far - on a flat run, not benefitting from an overall drop in elevation or anything (actually, it's a net climb of 5m )

The net climb of 5 miles is impressive. The only climb I have is the interstate on-ramp!

Sorry, I meant 5 meters. At 5 miles in altitude gain, I would have parked the car on Mt. Everest. That would have been one hell of a publicity stunt ...

Did another 37 km / 23 mile run yesterday. It's starting to be the norm if I go home late enough and take the back roads.

My car seems to have moods. E-motions?

I have done the same run where I managed 39 km (see above) a number of times. I always charge up the same way - 16A 220V fully charged, no precon. I always drive home the same way. Sometimes traffic doesn't let me cruise perfectly; I get that.

But still - for instance today: same drive, fairly empty roads, no adverse weather conditions like headwind, no a/c, .... I tried to drive just as carefully. But I had a hard time getting under 19 kWh/100km on average, compared to the 13.something above.

I've observed these fluctuations for a few days now. Not sure if it can be outside temperature. It hasn't changed that much.

Any ideas?
