i3S real world range?

Toying with replacing a 5 year old X3 diesel with an i3S (second car in family). What are people getting in the wild with range on these (not with range extender).

Depends entirely on how you drive (hyper-miling or full-throttle), where you drive (back roads or high-ways), and the ambient temps.

i3's current 33.3 Kwh (27.2 usable) battery is advertised for 114 miles.
The best I ever got on the 33.3 Kwh battery was ~157 miles on full charge, driving the back-roads in 70F weather (no AC, no heating).
Typically, it's more like 130-140 miles.
The worst is high-way driving in 15F, where you will be lucky to get 75 miles.

The most unpredictable variable is when the battery decides that it's too cold, and starts heating itself independent of what you are doing. And then you realize that your margin of error for getting home suddenly drops down to 1 mile. BTDT.

HTH,
a

Thanks afadeev, the commute involves a bit of city and a bit of highway (total 28 mile one way) so probably should be good on a charge! Picking one up today for a 24hr test drive.

You'll certainly be good for a 60 mile round trip day with plenty to spare. Deep winter can get hairy, but even then, 60 miles is easy.

Think you'll love the car; most all of us do.

Garage List
2022 BMW i4 m50  [10.00]
For example in my I3s i don't trust that range bar that is showing how far you can go, i go by the % on the charge,

For example atm when i leave home with a fully charged battery i have 278 km until empty i have a 15-20 min drive to work(city driving), halfway thru to work i have 250 km until empty then if i stop at the local 7eleven to buy a morning sandwich and turn of the car go in to buy my self a sandwich then when i come back to the car i suddenly have 217 km until empty charge by so it quite impossible to trust the range bar for now, because when i do arrive at work i have 96% battery left so the meter that show the range is not that reliable so i have to go by the % amount instead. My guess is it is constantly trying to account for how i drive, to be also noted i have only 500 km driven on the odo meter so it is gonna take some time for the car to learn how i drive, considering i will be owning the car for 3 years before i switch to an i4 i guess by that time it will have gotten to know me and give me better estimates on range.

What i do want to try though one day is to drive to our summer place with the car it is about 345 km away it is just in range for what the car should be able to do but i am nervous to try due to it being a lot of highway driving although there is plenty of charging stations along the way but that is if you come across one that is available and not occupied my someone else due to electric cars/hybrids starting to get a foothold here in Sweden.

2019 received a battery size upgrade so if anyone is looking make sure you keep that in mind. There’s other factors that go in to range (e.g. pre-conditioning) so be aware of what those are too.

I’ve got a ‘19 i3S BEV and I drive the car with no thought to maximizing range. ALWAYS in Sport mode - which doesn’t mean much really, just tightens steering and makes throttle inputs more sensitive. I don’t hammer it from lights but I’d say I drive on the quicker side in terms of acceleration. Full AC / full heat, not trying to be uncomfortable. I condition the cabin temp about 5-10 mins before leaving. I don’t have a L2 charger at home so I can’t pre-condition the battery.

Winter range - average about 115-120mi
Summer range - average about 140mi

And that range is usually with 10 or so miles to spare.
