Ahhh the stench of cynicism. What a bunch of sour grapes there are in here, when can we start making some bitter-ass wine?

This is a concept, and a pretty amazing display of technology. Of course it's going to get better, more integrated etc as they develop it more. Or not... it's a concept–an exercise in possibilities. That's what concepts are.

Since I was a kid, we talked about cars that drove themselves and can change colors etc. That's all here and all we can do is act like spoiled brats. Unreal.

I think it's an amazing idea. Why not have variable paint? And if it can reasonably ($) be installed at scale it may save quite a bit of production cost after it trickles down from top line cars. Maybe avoid pollutants and chemicals. And how about avoiding the headaches of matching paint after crashes! Wow.

I love it. They beat Apple to it. Apple has patented this for their car.

I don't think it's very realistic as an option for the future of BMW. However, as someone who loves my car, but gets bored often I could really enjoy this feature.

It'll be extremely fragile and expensive.
So I went and saw this at the CES show first hand.

It's actually like an applied vinyl wrap. Not a paint.

But either way looks super cool.

Fun to think of future applications. Especially when they can do color.

Yeah, I watched the video. I am surprised it looks as good as it does, but I guess they sprayed it with clear after they applied it. It's still much less practical than a vinyl wrap or PPF. They had to cut it into tons of pieces because the displays are still relatively stiff.

I just don't see how this is practical or feasible in reality. I've evaluated E Ink / e-paper displays for products I've worked on. They don't like to change at very low temps and won't be nearly impact resistant enough for entire body use. The color versions barely do color and are somewhat dull and lifeless. The newest stuff is a little better but the cost for a whole car's worth of it would be huge.

It's neat that they did it, and they did a great job, but this probably has as much of a chance of being produced as the Vantablack X5. Hopefully I'm wrong .

This is wild and so cool.

Would be cool if they came up with an invisibility cloak for concept car debuts, pull the invisible cloak off, and wa-la there's the car.

Trans-color is so hip.

Seriously though, M mode could have it's own color. Or you could have a super saiyan mode for electric cars. I like it.

People are overthinking this. They've got so much news coverage over this today. Those that didn't realise BMW has a fancy new electric conveyance now do. Mission accomplished. Very clever bit of PR.

I am putting the design of the car to one side and just embracing the fantastic technology!

For the wheels it's completely unrealistic to have wires going through the center hub to activate the color changing...even with induction it's technically almost impossible...

This is ridiculous can you imagine getting in minor crash
Amount of money it would take to fix it
And insurance premiums and money they have to payout.
No Thanks BMW

Sounds like to me that the wrap has paint capsules within it so it is still paint the way i see it.

im sure theyll get there but it will take awhile...right now they have positive and negative electric charges for black and white which simplifies the process

True but it's the idea, it can be used in small applications and build from their as the tech becomes better.

Like anything it takes the idea to generate interest and where theirs money to be made and a chance to make sales, it will happen.

It may take years but their was a time carbon fiber was not viable for mass production yet bmw did it.

So in time I'm sure their will be something that comes of it whether it be small or large.

Remember frozen colors ! Those where 10k dollar paint options and people still did it

It may not be the same teck as used in this prototype but I'm sure theirs a supplier working on some sort of electro chromatic vinyl as we speak .

Yea but I was just pointing out it was not like a paint as people would assume.

Not like a base coat clear coat and you can see where the wrap is lifting in areas so it appears to be a bad wrap job. I'll take a close up when I head back their.
