I wonder why BMW is not taking advantage of the sides of the trunk. Looks like there's a lot of space to be wasted behind the 2nd set of rear lights...?

Not really. Yes, X5 has some space under the cover, but it is shallow and you can't put much there. You can place things like lithium jump starter, inflator or snow brush type small items.
But iX is very deep and likely more usable. |

I see the cargo area specs on MotorTrend for the iX50 as 36/78 cu ft (second/first row):
https://www.motortrend.com/cars/bmw/ix/ Compared to the 2022 X5 at 33.9/72.3 cu ft: https://www.motortrend.com/cars/bmw/x5/2022/ Listed elsewhere pretty much the same - a disconnect here somewhere?... |

The trunk use case I was worried about was the family road trip with 2 adults, 2 kids and the dog (once or twice a year), where we need the trunk to hold our suitcases/bags and have a space in the middle to allow for our dog to be there, as we have with the X5. I was initially worried that the trunk was much more narrow and not as deep as the X5 because the pics made it look small. That's why I brought my measuring tape to verify it and was happy to see that it was just as wide and deep. I would have liked it to be shaped more like the X5 and be just as tall but it was by no means a deal breaker for me, but I can see that others may not be as content with its size. The reduced height may make it a little trickier to easily fit in irregular shaped items. |
