I charge it wirelessly, so it stops charging by itself when full. Could of course be that its ability to detect its charge level is inaccurate.

Anyone else charge theirs wirelessly?

ah i see.. I use the plug! mine seems to last quite a long time as well!

I don't think it would hurt to complain to your dealer about it? perhaps they can reset it?

did you vehicle come with it? I had to purchase mine separately. I wonder if there are settings which keep an active sync or sync when you turn the display on?

I haven't really played around with mine but I will check it out.

I did complain to my dealer, and they said it should last "up to 3 weeks". Which is a meaningless statement

Mine was a retrofit, by the dealer.

My suspicion is that its the wireless charging i.e. the key stops before its full, even though the display shows it to be full. I suspect the (key) battery remaining virtual gauge is inaccurate.

Have anyone successfully retrofitted a key to a 2014 model? Seems like there are some for sale on Ebay tighter with a new receiver. Anyone know something about it?

I'm not expert, but you may have a challenge getting any key sourced from EBay to work on your car as it needs to be coded to your vehicle.

does anyone know of a reset method? I mean im sure you have already thought about this but I was thinking maybe drain the battery fully and charge with a cable to full and see if you notice a difference?

and if there is some sort of soft reset or gard reset method anyone else knows of that would great !

I'm currently doing a daily test and log of its battery drain (unused) from 100% wireless charge. I will repeat that from a wired charge after it reaches "zero".

"Zero" being where the display does not work. The key still holds reserve to work the locks and ignition at that point of course.

Post Data log & conclusions

Daily LOG with notes. With Key unused, and simply checked daily using an Alexa daily reminder at 9pm.

Conclusions are:

1/ Key battery life is rather short at 16 days.
2/ Battery indicator is faulty, as the battery was depleted virtually as soon as it indicated 50% life remaining.
3/ Battery indicator is not fit for purpose.

Outcome:
BMW replaced my DisplayKey today under warranty (but new key is not fully working yet, as it has less info and will not pre-condition i8)

DisplayKey LOG:

Wirelessly charged 100% 10 Feb 2019, 18:29. Display indicates full battery.

12 Feb, 21:14. Full battery
13 Feb, 21:00. Full battery
14 Feb 21:00. Approx 90%
15 Feb 21:24. Approx 90%
16 Feb 21:00. Approx 90%
17 Feb 21:00. Approx 90%
18 Feb 21:00. Approx 80% - hard to be sure, could be unchanged at 90%
20 Feb 21:00. Approx 80%
21 Feb 21:00. Approx 80%
23 Feb 15:42. Approx 80% - hard to be sure, this and above ones could be 75%
23 Feb 21:00. Approx 75% - as above, could be 80%
24 Feb 21:00. Approx 75%
25 Feb 21:00. Approx 60%
26 Feb 21:00. Approx 60%
27 Feb 21:00. Approx 50% - but Key “crashing” and shutting down. This is the usual first sign of v low battery. Screen therefore effectively unusable properly. Then tried to use it again, and key will not activate (display remains off).
Placed it on wireless charging pad & tried to activate & charge it. Screen shows charging symbol, but otherwise will not active (boot up).
Checked every 30 mins.
27 Feb 23:01. Shows 100% but is still charging. Key can now be used.
27 Feb 23:08, screen self-activated and the key completed charging.

I've now got my new key, and it's exactly the same. As was the key with the brand new i8 Roadtser I had for nearly 2 weeks.

My conclusion is that all DisplayKeys will only charge to 100% if wire charged. Wireless charging simply does not charge them to 100%. So not a fault but a design issue.

BMW hilariously omitted a way to attach a keychain, and to be honest this is a large piece of glass and plastic which does not seem as robust as a regular key is. So seeing as I drop my keys regularly, I'm in need of some kind of case, preferably with the option to attach a keychain. Currently all BMW has to offer is a $50ish leather envelope which covers the entire key and scores a 0 in practicality (also not "keychainable"), and a $300ish S&M bodysuit by Mont Blanc which scores a perfect 10 in douchery (but is "keychainable"). Any clues greatly appreciated.
Hello, would you tell how you able to get the key please.?

I obviously brushed this off and politely asked him to order it anyways, if it didn't work (I was 100% sure it would anyways) I'd just have a really futuristic looking $600 paperweight. They looked at my proof of ownership and ordered it and the key arrived in two business days. When it arrived the same guy told me "I looked into it further, it will work for yours cause it's a 15 but it won't work on 14s". I think we determined that too is inaccurate since some members here have them working on 14s already. Anyways, once I got it I just opened my car with my old key (which now resembles a spare valet key in comparison to the huge but luxurious looking display key), left the old key out of range, held the new key up to the magic spot and it was instantly paired. Been working like a charm ever since, except I can't seem to get the preconditioning to act right. Really like the fact that you can turn the display function completely off when you want to and the key still works like a conventional BMW key fob so I was pleasantly surprised there's no real need to worry about constantly charging it or the battery going flat. The battery seems to last a very long time even though I've been playing around with it like a child does with his new iPhone on his first week of ownership, and there's really nothing to worry about in the event of it going completely dead if I forget to charge it in the next few days.
Hello, which part number do you got please?

I don't know how to code them, but that's a pity as I now have a spare i8 key I could have sold you.

They wiped my old key, so it no longer opens my car or connects to it.
