i8 tires - worn out after 6,000 miles??

I have a 2015 i8 (Giga). Just went to the dealership and they say I need 4 new tires. Measured 3 or 4mm remaining. I have 6,000 miles on the car. I drive it "conservatively" and just for around town stuff...

Anyone else seeing this? Seems way too fast to go thru tires... Suggestions? Comments? things to check??

I live in Portland, OR...

thanks!

Based on my research on here and from my dealer the tread life is all over, but 6k miles is on the lower end of the spectrum. Were you at 32psi the whole time?

yes - my tire pressure was in spec for the 20 months I've had the car.... seems crazy.

I've heard these specific bridgestones are very soft.....has anybody tried a different brand on the stock 20's wheels?

I've just replaced my rears @ 15k, due to a nail in one of them. Still legal tread but low enough to put a pair of new ones on. I insisted on the s001 compound even though they are pricey (I believe this is a specific compound for the i8).

Wonder if the s001 is soft and it's the warmer climates that are seeing the low lifespan? In the UK (certainly up north), a lot of the year is under 10 c/50 f - and wet, maybe this increases lifespan? Quick launches in the wet are great fun in this car but can't help thinking that doing the same in warm/hot/dry conditions would leave most of your tyre on the road!

That's absolutely terrible. I can't fathom spending $1000-1500 on tires every 6K miles.

I'm 8k miles with plenty of tread and I am far from a conservative driver. But we have long, straight highways in Dallas! 👍

OP - alignment, toe to spec?

I will probably go to Michilen Super Sport once the originals wear out. Loved them on the 911's.

I drive like I stole her, hills hairpins and bends

9k miles and 4mm tread left.

Are you sure its not uneven wear, tracking issue, tyre pressure?

the i8 is still at the dealership. I am going to mention these anecdotes to him... Feels like my situation (4mm in 6k miles) is very out of whack with what other i8 owners are seeing. I will ask them to check alignment, etc... I have kept the tire pressure up, so I am hoping BMW Portland will take some responsibility for this. Will post updates when I get them.

Still welcome any other experiences from other i8 owners... is this normal?

Way too premature. I went 15K on my first set of rears and 16K on the next set.

I switched to 255's in the front and 275's in the rear, still on stock wheels. Understeer is gone. The reduction in fuel economy is negligible.

Yes. They fit perfectly, the understeer and the thing that I hate most, transition through on-center of steering in all BMWs, is GONE. For the front, 255 is perfect.

I will go to 285 or 295 in the rears next time.

so far, the dealer is keeping to his position that this is "normal" for my car and there is nothing they can do about it. My i8 is still at the dealer for a fuel door problem and (hopefully) a software upgrade.

Any suggestions on how I go about escalating this within the dealership or within BMW? It is crazy to think I need to plan on replacing $1500 tires every 6,000 miles...

Sorry to high jack your tire thread, but is your "fuel door problem" that it occasionally won't open?

The tyres come with 8mm+ and if you have 4mm remaining you are 2/3rd through their life assuming min tread 1.6mm.

So if you run them to min then that should see 9000 miles. Not too shabby given how soft they are.

If you want harder tyres fit the non-i8 specific S001s.

I think what's posted above regarding UK temps is applicable. If you're in a hot part of the US then the wear might be worse. I'm in the UK and have been getting ok wear from the 4000 miles I've done in the last 3 months.

Unless you have a lot of rain/snow to deal with 4mm is fine for awhile. Get tires from TireRack rather than dealer.

For those of you who replaced your tires, did you go by the wear bar? I'm at just under 10k miles, getting close. I drive conservatively. Does Bridgestone put ANY type of warranty on these? Even 5k miles?

I think in spec sizes this is the only company that will work?

6,000 is low. I replaced all of mine at 10,000.

On my now long gone 550i GT I wore out the tires at about 8500.
