Our Newest Edition :)

Team Wheels Boutique is back again with yet another masterfully done BMW i8. This is our 13th…or 14th…or was it 15th i8? I don’t know, it’s been over a dozen of ‘em and it’s getting hard to keep track! All we know is that more and more i8 customers come to us because of our reputation as the i8 experts. We usually go with a more colorful setup to tie into the hybrid sports cars blue theme, but this client wanted to go a different route for his build. So naturally we called our boys at The Sign Savers to help with some color elimination and window tinting, then ordered up a set of Satin Black P101’s in 22” to finish off the stealthy Dark Knight vibe. Here’s to the next dozen or so ones we get our hands on.

Wheel Specs:
HRE P101
22”x9” // 22”x10.5”
Finish: Satin Black
Tires: Pirelli P Zero Nero GT
Front: 245/30/22
Rear: 285/25/22

Blue Trim Black Out by The Sign Savers

These blue wheels on an i8 really work with the blue trim.

Just what the i8 needs- something to attract attention!

Haha. I was uneasy about it at first but the moment that I pulled into a gas station (for coffee only of course) and saw the smile on a young kid's face it made me appreciate it all. Knowing that quite possibly that boy will forever love the BMW brand and this car specifically made my entire experience with the i8.

So some people buy cars to "make a scene" and to be seen? If so, why not something a little more obvious:

If necessary the wheels could be painted fuchsia if that would help.

Some do, but the majority purchase performance wheels for other reasons. Reducing unsprung weight, gaining a more flush look, opening up different tire options, stronger build quality, things of that nature.

BMW says its i8 wheels are strong but light. Are your wheels stronger and/or lighter? By how much? BMW also says it has performed aerodynamic testing on its wheels and that this makes them suitable for the i8. Can you share your tests with us?

HRE Wheels are Forged, and in every aspect of the production process is uncompromised. Our wheels come from the best high quality T6-6061 Forged aluminum to give us strength, and where we remove weight is in the design itself also with side cuts, and backpad pocketing as well. Designing a structure of a wheel to remain rigid yet strong is an art, which is why we spend a significant amount of time on each design prior to bringing it to the market which is why we have been so successful in the wheel manufacturing industry for nearly 40 years now.

If our wheels are good enough for the newest Gumpert Apollo Arrow with 1000HP which you see below, or countless Underground Racing 1800RWHP Lamborghini Gallardo's (see video below that), then it's going to be plenty of strength and light to give you what your car deserves, which is not only strong, light, but also has some style too.

Also the OEM 20x7.5 weighs 24lbs (which by the way is VERY narrow), where as an HRE P101 wheel in 20x8.5 (so a full inch wider) weighs 19.80lbs (approximate depending on offsets required).

BMW will never build a better wheel than HRE. This is HRE's one and only specialty. Building stronger, lighter wheels than stocks with custom fitment is what they do. It's not about causing a scene or calling out for attention. Some people just are not content with every single aspect of the car, some people want to improve performance, or make the car suit their personal taste. Companies like these allow us to do that.

I am convinced you are right.

On the other hand, companies like Nike, adidas Reebok and Puma also allow us to buy lighter more colorful shoes that we can wear with our tuxedoes. I suppose it all depends on one's taste. Or lack thereof.

I think you're hung up on the colors though. Most people go for the usual bare aluminum, titanium, black, etc. I personally have never done anything crazier than a smoke or gunmetal color (with the exception of my i8 wheels for which the visible part is gunmetal and the inner barrel is in "i8 blue", a detail most people miss because it's really not that easy to see). A lot of people ended up doing their wheels completely in blue for the i8 because they thought it went with the whole theme of the car, but they were the exception. Notice the wheels HRE provided for Apollo Automobili. They aren't a crazy design or color, they're just good looking, light, strong forged wheels for performance vehicles and that's what these companies are really about, just like Nike and co. are about creating quality footwear for athletes, (or so they say), the options for crazy, unusual colors are just a bonus for those who want to go that route (and hopefully never the route of wearing sports footwear with a tuxedo). On the other hand, the i8 is a sports car, not really the kind of car that makes me think of formal attire.
