How much SHOULD this cost?
Brought my '07 335I coupe into the dealership to get the fuel pump replaced under the extended warranty...... This is what they came back with. How much should this cost realistically at an independent mechanic? Any other thoughts? Help.....

Some of these items can be DIY; but, it entails leaving your car out of commission for a while.
Just to give you an example and this is on my 1998 E36 M3, I redid the following: Water Pump, thermostat and aluminum housing, all associated hoses, serpentine belts, Vanos hose, Aluminum radiator, expansion tank, fan clutch, engine mounts, both left and right front control arms with upgraded polyurethane joint bushings, both left and right front wheel bearing, both left and right front and rear brake rotors, front and rear ABS sensor, front and rear brake sensors, front and rear Struts and shocks(coilover), alternator, battery, negative cable, ground cable, left and right RTABs: around $4k. I did most of the labor myself. |

Don't get me wrong, but ummmm
How much is a 2007 335 so start with? Isn't the quotation costing almost the same price of the actual car?

Assuming you need all of the work that they identified, you're almost guaranteed to pay less at an independent mechanic. First step is to take the car to another mechanic and have them verify that all the work the dealership identified needs to be performed.
Assuming you need all the work, you can save a lot of money by purchasing these parts online yourself. You can get OEM parts without the dealer markup this way or use reputable aftermarket replacements for a fraction of the cost. The nice thing is that you already have all the part numbers listed to do your research. Also, as cbisson pointed out, it does look like they have the brake service listed twice. Not sure if thats a mistake or intentional but its a bit suspicious. |

90% of that is easy DIY shit. $70 in labor to replace the microfilter? Its like 6 screws and is sitting on top of the engine. Its a 5 minute job.
Brakes are stupid easy (and as noted they have a quote for all 4 AND the front and rear). You can get a brake bleeder kit for under $100 and ATE TYP200 for $20. Hell, get two and bleed the hell out of it. If you can get the wheel off you can bleed the brakes. Air filter is another couple of bolts, stupid easy job. The suspension is the real rape there. For starters, if they are putting new tires on your car they should be throwing in the alignment. Second, their labor is INSANE. $350 to replace a thrust rod bushing. And its $180 in parts, the whole arm is that and its 30 minutes with a lift. I did my ENTIRE suspension with OEM manufactured parts (all arms, struts, springs, bearings, CA links, etc) for less than what they want for the front struts. Honestly, Id never talk to this guy again and if he called me Id tell him to go F himself with that. Then Id go to pelican or FCP and start to buy the parts for the jobs. Feel free to tackle them as you can, piecemeal. Other than the brakes and suspension. Do the thrust arm (whole, don't dick with trying to press out the bearing, for the cost you get a new bearing and joint) with the suspension, do the brakes as a whole job. Do the spark plugs and OFHG together since youre up there. The filters can be done whenever. Honestly the only thing on this list that seems legit hard is that sealing sleeve. But based on this guys quote on everything else Im going out on a limb and say his is way too high anyway so find a good independent and get a quote from them. Honestly, even if these prices are fair, if Global Imports BMW/Baron BMW is any indication, youre better off going to an independent anyway. I have been really, really, really disappointing with the quality of service performed by dealers. Every single time I have taken my car to Global Imports they have fucked something up, something obvious that even having someone take a second look at would have been caught. I think anymore they hire morons who are only capable of doing recalls with specific instructions (and even then they screw shit up). |

Okay, step 1. The car has a brake pad monitoring system that tells you when the pads are spent and need replacement. There is a red icon that comes on and stays on until the pads are replaced and the monitoring system is reset. So is there a red "Brake" light on in the section of the gauge cluster between the tachometer and speedometer? At 2MM front and 1MM rear, the light should have been on for several months by now and the CBS system should be notifying you that brake service is due. If there is no light on, then the previous owner either tied off the pad wear sensors, or some how completely FUBAR'd the brake pad wear system. The only other explanation is the cars software was completely reflashed recently.
But as others have stated, just find a reputable independent BMW repair shop, which will charge you less than the dealer to replace the brakes. They quoted the brake job twice. The gave you a separate price for the fronts, and a separate price for the rears, the they quoted all 4 brakes as a single $1,500 job. As far as the struts and shocks, take a flashlight and look at them. If they are leaking, you will find evidence as a wet, oily, grimmey, spot on the strut tubes below the bottom spring perch (look above the top of the tire). The rest shocks if leaking will be wet below the plastic tube that covers the shock piston. Again look above the top of the tire. And again, the BMW Indy should replace those components far less expensively than the dealership. Who has been caring for this car anyway? Someone has been ignoring the CBS notifications. looks like the guy charged you for front brakes, then rear brakes and then separate charge for all 4 brakes. I would find a more honest service advisor.
if you told him you have extended warranty, he might have overcharged on everything figuring you won't care. |

Lets see I did my spark plugs this weekend and changed the
cabin filter. Spark plug cost 11 dollar's each I got the good ones NGK iridiums. took 3 hours of my time and couple of scrapes. I think the double platinum's can be had for around 8. Cabin air filter 25 bucks or something like that. engine air 25 bucks. I would attempt to do my own OFG I think the gasket is 10 bucks but you might need a ratcheting torx . Also did the oil bought two 5 quart liquid moly bottles for 40 each leaves enough so next time I only have to buy one . Mann oil filter 8 dollars . All from FCP Euro. |

Or find a Indy you can trust.
There is some stuff that is really hard to do by yourself or without a lift. The biggest thing I see on you list like that would be the Mechatronic sleeve. But that is a guess on my part. |
