Need a new 3-pin charger (and I have a question)

Charger flashes red now. I was too dumb to connect to a surge adapter, so possibly it fried.

Do other non-BMW chargers work on the i8, or must it be BMW brand chargers?

No worries! Any EV charger with a J1772 (standard) plug will work. Level-1 (120V) or Level-2 (220/230V) will work just fine.

I've charged my i8 from the level-1 BMW charger, from a level-1 charger I bought for the Chevy Volt I used to have, from a level-2 40A factory Tesla charger (with a J1772 adapter), and from a generic portable Level-2 32A charger I keep in the frunk of my Tesla.

No BMW magic required. (Otherwise how would you make use of all those public charging stations?)

Other bands should work fine. BMW has followed the industry standard.
