I remember topgear episode where they drove through the site once - probably not strictly factual but the place is still very eerie!

Quite sad really that we humans are the biggest threat to our planet!

Did you have to wear special equipment to visit this place ?

I still remember the next few falls after this. I was so mad because picking berries was prohibited. Funny how a child processes things.

for visiting the place, even its summer time its a must to wear long sleeves, trousers and some shoes that avoid exposing your feet..

the areas they re taking actually is cleaned like roads or the houses but there are still some parts of the area that has some significant amount of radiation still.. some hot spots that x1000 than normal levels.. thats why its prohibited to go away from the road to soil, cleaning shoes if there is some mud before hopping back to the bus or van.. and i realized that all the vehicles that permitted to go inside the area, windows cant be rolled down.. and no air con or air circulation from outside.. no drinking water or something from a cup.. only bottled drinks are ok.. there is no place that sells tea or coffee inside.. though there is a place for you to eat though.. not advised to touch the animals..

before going there i made some research about the radiation.. seems there are 3 types of them.. alpha beta and gamma.. alpha is the most heaviest and kinda most lethal one but they cant travel that much and can be stopped even by a piece of paper.. beta can travel longer in the air and can be stopped by few millimeters of plastic or a thin metal.. gamma is the most determined one that can travel pretty long distances and it penetrates through materials quite easily.. thick concrete is needed.. so this clothing restriction is coming from these reasons.. if anyone here specialist can be interesting hear from them also..

as a general feeling, yes the main roads are ok but the area is not small and i really dont think that Ukrainians really cleaned the whole area.. i had a geiger/dosi meter also to measure the radiation.. havent seen any part of soil that has normal levels of radiation.. so long as you wont lie down on those soil naked for some time, if you wont eat that soil actually the radiation levels are just a bit higher than an average big city.. and it wont be harmful since you wont exposed to those radiation for a long time.. cant remember the radiation comparison with X-rays but, it should be something like having 3-4 X-rays a year amount additional radiation you re being exposed..

Biggest Man Made Disaster was created by communist Russia but it wasn't the melt down, it was the destruction of the Aral Sea.

I think Fukushima is worse than Chernobyl. Not that having bragging rights here is something to wear as a badge of honor. Chernobyl involved a single reactor failure which for the most part is stable excluding the issues with the sarcophagus.

With Fukushima, there was a meltdown of 3 reactors. The situation is far from stable at the moment. No one has been able to locate where exactly the melted reactors are. Robotic equipment sent in to do a detailed survey of the damaged reactors have been largely failures due to the extreme radiation frying the robots. There is clear evidence of ground water contamination running through the facility on top of the sea water being pumped into the reactor vessels and spent fuel rod pools to keep what's left of the reactors stable. That contaminated sea water is also leaching back into the ocean. To compound things sea water being thrown into the reactor vessel is also not good for the long term viability of any structures in there.

There has been talk about freezing the ground under the facility to prevent the water run off into the sea which would have to be done for a pretty indefinite period as no one knows how they're going to get in there to clean up the mess.

I don't want to diminish the sacrifices made by the men from the Russian military along with the fire fighters nicknamed the liquidators. Can't imagine walking out on top of the reactor building with protective gear that did basically nothing to protect them to shovel/push radioactive material back into the pit/crater. Not even the crew in the helicopters circling above dropping material to suppress the fire were spared from the effects of the radiation. And not to forget the civilians that were harmed/died from the event.

Good post. I've done quite a bit of research on this subject and find it very interesting. Can you believe there are still several RBMK reactors still in operation?
Somewhere online there is a simulator where you can attempt to control an RBMK reactor and attempt to prevent a meltdown.

yco....great post. Did you watch Chernobyl Heart? Documentary from 2003. My Aunt, Maryann DeLeo won an Academy Award for it. I was at the award ceremony with my family.

She went to all those places, and had to wear protective equipment for some high radiation zones. But the saddest thing is how the land is so contaminated still all these years later, which has caused high numbers of birth defects and disease.

It’s a very moving and eye opening documentary. Here’s a qwik trailer...

Last remark about Fukushima so I don't take the thread way off topic.

Here's my post on a thread talking about Fukushima last year which contains video footage inside some of the Daiichi reactor buildings and a documentary talking about the disaster:

The China syndrome.
That's what it's called in America. I wonder what they called it in Japan? Bermuda syndrome, the Nigeria syndrome?

Just play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. at Tchernobyl (any part) and you would get a real impression how it looks and feels to stumble around into that area.
COD is far away from that imo.
