Very interesting, thank you.

I wonder how much better tires would make a difference, or is the car pretty much near its handling limit anyway.

Also I am continuously puzzled by the different 0-60 times various tests achieve. I've seen listed 4.4, but instrumented tests at 3.8 and 3.6. I know it's been discussed before but still curious.

Thanks, and interesting test, that only proves what is already well known. The i8 is not a track car in any way whatsoever. The 911 would always walk a track challenge vs the i8.

Pleasantly surprised to see how much fun it was on track though, and THAT slide

And yes, wider grippier tyres would improve its time a lot, albeit the 911 would still win.

Wonder what 50hp extra for The i8 would have been like. No one tunes the i8 yet?

On the track the i8 can't capture braking energy fast enough to recharge its battery, so after a lap or two it is gas engine only. Perhaps a super capacitor would help. This test was a single hot lap, on a second lap the difference would be dramatic.

Even as a BMW forum, I think a large majority here would take the 911 and never look back.

What a ridic comparison. I'd take the Gts regardless of the outcome honestly. Nothing about the i8 is appealing to me...

For a track/road course car...then yes. But as a pure street car, I'd take the i8 on looks/technology over any 911.

Nothing new on this comparo. Same old story about the i8. Great chasis, underpowered and complex drivetrain and skinny tires which are better for MPG than Lateral Gs. I still have hope for an i8M.

Waiting for i8 vs Speciale comparo next.
But seriously why don't they check how it compares to Prius on a track? I mean take it from the third lap not the first one...

Just looking at the cars standing still the tires on the i8 look anemic compared to Porsche and that's how I knew this was no real competition lol

This seriously is the dumbest comparison - the i8 is not a dedicated sportscar - the claimed justification for comparing them is so baseless - price??!!?? The dollars spent on the i8 are not for performance... Why not do a track battle between a fully loaded 750i and a 911 4S spec'd out so that they are the same MSRP- and then conclude (not so surprisingly) that the 911 4S is the better track car (no $hit....)...

I do believe the i8 represents the future - but BMW did not optimize it for the track. Now a future BMW M car with i8 advanced hybrid technology will absolutely move the bar forward (look at the 918, McLaren P1, LaFerrari)....

Sure, the problem with i8 is the tires. Put wide slicks and I am sure it will beat 911. Including GT3.

Honestly I am one of the people who has ZERO interest in the 911. Actually I am not a particular fan of BMW either. But the i8 has immediately made me an owner and fan of BMW.

Point is I think this car is aimed at a slightly different crowd than 911 or M fans. The comparison I took more to point out that the i8 is stronger than it has any right to be, not that it is a true competitor to 911 in any real sense. It is not meant to be.

wonder how the i8 will fare against the Merc G550. Both have similar HP and price range.
