so pretty much everything bar the 1 series and i3

Nope. The I20 platform is bespoke, like the i8 was. In fact, some reporters at launch event in Munich said BMW told them no other vehicles besides the iX would be built on the I20 platform. Once you see it in person, you can tell it shares nothing with any other BMW platform.

The question is: is I20 an orphan or a collectible car?

Get a new dealer if you are about to spend $100K — one that knows something about the product.

Not quite. jonjo001 was correct.
iX is built on the CLAR platform, albeit a very heavily modified one - e.g. no transmission tunnel unlike i4. But it still based on the CLAR platform nonetheless, unlike i8. And it is manufactured in Dingolfing plant along side all the other CLAR platform cars (4, 5, 6, 7, 8 series cars).

It is also true it is bespoke and that no other car will be using this heavily modified platform, as BMW is transitioning to the Neue Klasse platform.

Could be marketing speak, but no other car is on the ix platform from all their corporate data.
