Idk

Probably not, since the assistant chief engineer said all the R&D is done. It's just a matter of market feedback. He said something a long the line if people in the US wants a MT to let the dealers know.

Well if they don’t recognize that 50% of the target market for this car NEEDS a manual then obviously they just don’t want to spend the $$$.

Very sad...

Yeah. Toyota’s own market research suggests that their target market for the Supra would have a substantial percentage in manual take rates, yet theyre sitting here like, “we’re waiting to see if there’s demand for it.”

It was from day one, suppose to target the Cayman, so more about dynamics than outright power. More 2000GT than the mk4 Supra

I'm pro MT, and hoping that one will but offered with the A90. With that said...

Sorry, but both of y'all are wrong. During the market research they found out that only about 20% of potential buyers would be interested in a manual. There is a big differences between internet fan boys and actual buyers.

For these wanting to save the MT.

A very enthusiastic 'thank you' for supplying context to folks with blinders on.

In this day and age, no car 'needs' a manual unless the plan is to either drift it regularly or get it out of (snow)drifts regularly.

The price seems reasonable to me. Base Supra in 1996 was $38,000. Adjusted for inflation to 2018, $61,0000. Turbo Supra was $48,000 in 1996, thats $77,000 in 2018!

Oh I forgot to update. Not official numbers, and some have hinted that the guy that made that post is wrong.

But even if its true, $52k for a base I6 Supra is only like $2k more vs the 4 banger Z4.

20% would be huge and ignoring it would be comically foolish. I think that would put it in the top ten if not top five of current manual take rates.

If the C7 is really going away and the C8 is DSG only, this would be an epic miss for Toyota.

The needs of many out weight the needs of the few, but thats up to Toyota to decide. Also if y'all are concerned about a MT than goes on those sites and let you voices be heard. You guys are acting like its a done deal. Toyota never said it wasn't going to offer a MT, unlike BMW which already said no a MT in the US Z4.

Again, nothing official. But if took the pricing of the 2008 Z4M coupe at $52,000 and apply inflation that would come out to $60,872.

Toyota Supra 2019: manual transmission still on the cards

https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-new...he-cards-72381

Quote:
Rumours of an auto-only Toyota Supra future may be greatly exaggerated, with the car’s chief engineer Tetsuya Tada excitedly telling CarsGuide he’s driven a six-speed manual pre-production example in Europe.

Tada-san also revealed that the much-anticipated coupe will definitely launch with the same eight-speed ZF torque-converter automatic transmission hardware as used by BMW but was keen to stress that it will be running a bespoke Toyota software tune to distinguish it.

“There have been many requests for these things, manual, dual-clutch” he said. “It will launch just with the eight-speed” but conceded “more [transmission] versions” could follow if there's enough demand.

The new ‘A90’ Supra will run two BMW-sourced powerplants, including the B58 turbocharged inline-six that was chosen partly so the Supra can remain true to its straight-six roots. Actual outputs are yet to be confirmed, but Toyota has stated minimums of 220kW/450Nm ahead of launch, teamed with a 50:50 weight distribution.

In terms of total dimensions the Supra is a size-up from the 86, but it will actually have a shorter wheelbase. This has limited the rear-drive Supra to just two seats. It will also score Brembo brakes and an electronically actuated active rear differential.

The Supra was recently in Australia undergoing evaluation testing. Australian input will make it to the final global tune of the car.

The much-hyped coupe will finally shed its camouflage in January during the Detroit motor show.

I mean for the same money, I’d rather have the BMW and the service experience that goes with it. Going to the Toyota dealer is like visiting the Chevrolet dealer. I cringe when taking the Corvette in for service despite the dealer having dedicated “corvette technicians”.

I've had many different brands over the years, chrysler, nissan, porsche, chevrolet, bmw

I've had a variety of experiences but there was not a clear correlation between the brand and the experience

bmw forgot to tighten the oil cap which led to a very frightening check engine light coming on an hour away from the dealer

porsche failed to properly explain and understand its own oil measuring system causing me to reasonably believe they had underfilled

nissan service experiences were pretty seamless

I think your service experience is more related to the quality of the people and culture of the particular dealership than the brand...

Kinda late to this discussion but good read so far.

Regarding the transmission option, sure it's been discussed to wits end but I'd like to add my perspective...

The unintended consequences of failing to offer a true manual transmission in this platform might be a serious problem for brand/model longevity. Reason being, there is demand for it-especially in what is essentially a "toy car" and 2nd/3rd owners who will use it for HPDEs.

Just like any other auto/smg/dct car, they do age and after a certain amount of time feel old (just like a computer or smartphone). Regardless how advanced the transmission feels today, in 10 years it will feel old and clunky. Plus factor in unknowns like manufacturer defects, running costs and it could seriously sway people away from buying and holding these long term. (i.e. car worth $25k with problematic $10k transmission). Heck look at pricing on the SMG E46 M3 and E60 M5 SMGs.

The other unknown is will they support and make parts for it in 15 years? You can still reliably get parts for E30s, E36s, Miatas, etc. and I have a feeling the answer is probably no for the "Supra"/Z4.

If (Toyota/BMW) want to see this be more of a long-term cult classic car and get all the benefits of homegrown aftermarket support, offer a true manual transmission. Otherwise it will likely lose it's appeal in a couple years and be on to the next thing- unless that is their goal?

If that's true, one could begin to question to how the rest of the car is built/designed (5 year lifespan)?.

EDIT: I'd also like to add, don't underestimate the importance of the japanese tuner scene. If this becomes a cult classic car, there could be a ton of benefits for BMW owners in aftermarket parts support/upgrades.
