Stuff to do in Houston?

Hey friends,

I'm headed to Houston tomorrow for a conference in Galveston Thurs and Fri. I'll basically have all day Wednesday to explore Houston, and potentially the evening Thursday.

Besides the airports, I've never been to the Lone Star state. I'm thinking of hitting up the NASA museum but I'd also rather be exploring the city rather than being inside a building. The Rockets game is on the table too. Mostly, I'd like to see what's good downtown as far as attractions, shopping, and food goes.

Please help!

Would've defeated GS last year if it weren't for that...

Meh, Harden would have found his way out of winning, left to his own.

Same here....been through there frequently, but only had 1 trip with any extra time. Ended up doing the NASA tour as that stuff interests me anyway.

Typically when I travel, I'm being entertained by someone else during any free time so I don't have to put much thought into it.

I think I was in LA right after the Staples center first opened to see a Lakers-Rockets playoff game one time from box seats.

I was too busy celebrity hunting in the crowd to watch most of the game.

Not sure if there is one downtown but go eat at Torchys Tacos!!!! I was in Houston recently visiting a buddy and he brought me there. I loved it, cool place to watch sports also. If you’re a Taco lover it’s a must!

We were down that way four years ago. Highlights were going the GH Bush library and The Space Center. Both highly worth it.
Had some good eats but can't remember any specific names of places.

Any street/avenue that's good for just walking?

Is downtown walkable like say, Philly, SF, Vancouver, etc.?

Also, is the area around the Galleria mall worth a look?

Or go to San Antonio - tour the Alamo, do the river walk with dinner on the river and then take in a Spurs game.

Like to help you but it was a quick two day stay for the wife and I. Rented a car and hit the road, two trips in two days. Hit and run thing. Sorry I'm not the guy to ask.

This came across my mind but I land around noon tomorrow. By the time I get the car it'll be like 1 pm. I can't justify spending 6 hrs driving to Austin and back when I have to be in Galveston by the evening.

I'll come by one day. Honestly wish I had family or friends in Texas, I'd have an excuse to consider moving down there one day. Beautiful homes at reasonable prices, big cities, low taxes.

Instead my azz is headed to LA.

I'm a Pistons fan since birth, I despise the Spurs.

Friggin Pop, Manu, Parker, Duncan, and especially Horry made me cry to bed.

Got offered a job in LA once. Just the week of being there doing consultant work for the company was enough to sway me otherwise.

Anytime we went anywhere....you might as well be prepared for the traffic. And the cost of living at the time was so much more higher than where I live now.

If I had one place I could move..it would be Alaska. We spent almost 3.5 weeks up there a few years ago. I enjoyed every moment of it!

Houston metro and Galveston suck! I travel to Houston a couple times out of the year. Often scheduling around a rockets game or an astros day game. Downtown is a ghost town after 6.
Rice village is my go to when near downtown.

Torchys tacos is a chain taco shop. You've probably had better living in SoCal. If you want authentic Texmex, go to ninfas.

As mentioned above, get in a car or hop on plane out of hobby to dallas or Austin/SA.

How is Dallas two hours from Houston? You'd better be ready to hit the speed governor for most of that trip.

Torchy's is just okay, but you could do wildly better. Velvet Taco or Tacodeli both do the chain thing better up here, and anything on Maple or in Oak Cliff will be better than any of those three.

Yeah in LA you are just paying out of your azz to even live in a cardboard box. Insane taxes and real estate prices. California has increasingly become a welfare state, and everybody who isn't super rich seems to be getting squeezed.

But at the end of the day it depends on what provides you the quality of life you desire. SoCal is incredibly beautiful and there's an endless amount of stuff to do. There aren't many parts of the country that can match it in that regard. I feel if the cost becomes too unbearable I could always head out to Miami.

Having lived in the Northwest for over a decade I have come to despise the cold and overcast/drizzling weather. The saving grace has been how modern and booming cities Seattle and Vancouver are. When you factor in the gloomy cold weather and lack of city life, I personally have no desire to even visit Alaska.
