Charging question
Hi all. Just received my new i3s. It's my first electric car so getting my head around it all. Forgive me if this is a really daft question…
I have a Rolec wall pod at home (7.2 kw charger). My i3s came with a Mode 3 cable (22 kw) and a Mode 2 3-pin cable. I tried plugging in the Mode 3 charger earlier and the car failed to charge. I then tried the Mode 2 (3 pin) and this charges fine. In iDrive charge settings, Mode 2 is set to Low and Mode 3 is set to Reduced. Am I missing something as I'm a baffled why Mode 3 charge isn't working? From my understanding the cable can handle a max of 22 kw so it should still charge the car at 7.2 kw without any issue… |

My car was set up the same.
I have a 11KW home charger and the high quality BMW cable, so I set my Mode 2 and 3 charging to high. I guess the reduced is a default setting from BMW in case you use an off-brand cheap cable or something. The Mode 2 is probably set to reduced by default as most probably don't have a dedicated socket outlet for charging. Should be no problem to change Mode 3 to high if you have a home charger. For Mode 2 it would depend on the socket you connect to, In my country I would have it at high if I had a 16A circuit with nothing else connected, but leave it at reduced if that was a shared circuit or a 10A circuit.
