It's 2021…….I patrol in L.A. County with a crap ass D.A. in a state that is about to legalize hallucinogens and other dangerous drugs (…like Oregon did) and a Governor who reduces certain sex crimes involving children from felonies down to misdemeanors. Appreciate that! Last year took a lot out of me/us……in every capacity and in every major metropolitan area across the United States. So much, in fact, that I have adjusted my plan. I plan to be out of patrol in 2-3 years max. I will promote and take on some other tasks. I'm networking a ton right now.

Seriously? I did not realize it was that far gone. I don't know anything about these sex crimes against children being misdemeanor or where the line is drawn, might have to safely Google that, but I think that would probably be the point I find most disturbing.

It's not just California, although they have some real issues with the governor and his views on crime. But have a look at what happens north of the border. Western democracies are getting away from punishing criminals and trying to rehabilitate them. On the surface a good idea, however governments roll is to protect society and citizens (we're pretty tightly regulated when it comes to protecting ourselves) so violent dangerous criminals should be kept away from law abiding citizens, but that's clearly not happening is it.

For example….

…if I find you with photographs of naked children/child porn plastered all over your bedroom walls, it is now only a misdemeanor as long as the photos don't depict actual sex.

So as I understand it pedophilia has no cure, and I get that it's a sickness but this takes me back to the premise of protecting society from people who are dangerous. Now maybe the guy with the pics on his bedroom wall has never touched a child or directly harmed a child but those pictures came from someone who did. We have lost the plot.

Take away the fear of punishment and it empowers criminality. Our D.A. isn't prosecuting for a bunch of crimes and criminals know this……even better than we do.

That is one of the reason why I stop being proactive. I just do the bear minimum and answer calls for service. Our jails won't take anyone with a misdemeanor crime.

You and me both. I answer calls for service and slow roll to non-emergent/non-priority calls, taking the maximum time allowable by policy (…which is an hour).

This is not new, just worse. I was sued on a number of occasions for my actions. The upside for us was that all liability was assumed by the employer/city. And if we were charged criminally our defence was covered by the Association (union). It was getting so bad defending officers that our dues went through the roof. And FTR, in well over 90% of criminal prosecutions police officers are acquitted.
