It's a rare occurrence for sure, and I've only ever made a gain on 2 cars in my life. One was this Lotus, and the other was a classic Ferrari. (Neither was bought for the purpose of making a gain.)

Anyway, as stated the sole purpose of the mods on that car were to enhance performance, which it did:

I actually like mods that improve a car's aesthetics, and/or its performance. If I were modding an i8, I would personally start with swapping in wider wheels and stickier tyres. Then better brakes. A remap would be next on that list.

V8 i8

This is AWESOME

Appears to be a modded V8 i8, but isn't really an i8.

Crikey, think how much faster you would have gone with three quarters of a steering wheel!!!

I like aggressive mods that improve a car, and hate those that make it worse. Really as simple as that.

So I really liked the paddle shift mod posted a few days ago. I had the opposite view of your steering wheel mod, which makes the car much worse to drive.

An example of far more aggressive modding to my own car:

Pretty much everything is modded: replacement engine, supercharger, charge cooler, suspension, wheels, brakes, tyres, body components, aero, seats, steering wheel, instruments etc etc.

Bottom line is the car is 10% lighter than stock but more than 2x the power, with significantly enhanced parts. Faster, corners much better, stops much better, much higher downforce.

That's proper "aggressive" modding

Poor modding is chopping 1/3 of the steering wheel off.
Haha you mean the paddle shifter mod you said was beyond your comfort zone?

Yes, I did not feel comfortable to do that job myself. (If I really wanted to have those paddle shifters in my i8, I'd get a garage to install them. But my i8 is only a daily car, so it's not important to do. Same reason I've not put wider wheels on it.)

I got pros to do all work on that Lotus. None of it was done myself.
