I'm unlikely to, because I have a faster and more powerful car anyway so don't feel a great need to make the i8 perform better.

I did enquire back in September though, and they stated it was £600 all in, and done your home address.

Thank you. This is interesting but not enough in my mind to risk warranty.

I used to have two 996 turbo's both remapped. Porsche never asked anything even when in tor work under warranty.

These days i am sure they would find easily.

I would consider it if it was something like what I've done on the Miata RF or the C7 which is a handheld tablet that I could install the tune or remove it if need be. Keep in mind every time your car goes in for a update they do go into that ECU and just like coding, the tune would be wiped as well. Flashing seems not to be a smart option for this car, a cloned ECU or a tablet would be the only way I'd do it.

For those who are worried - I did upgrade to an Essing stage 1 and added a Bluetooth FI exhaust and took my car in for annual maintenance oil change maintenance I asked them not to touch the codes and all is well. As long as you don’t come with a busted engine it will be ok. On the other hand on my 435ix when I added the bmw performance chip they wiped the ECU this impacted my remote starter but i got it fixed

Whats with all the hate for the i8?
I love the skinny tyres, it lets the chassis flow at lower speeds, so you can really enjoy the crisp handling. Shame the Steering is quite lifeless, but a hydro would be impossible in this car. Will try some wider fronts, perhaps a complete set of P4s for track work.

I just came from a 991, and allso own the original NSX. IMO the i8 is better than both.
Its a better everyday car than 991, with much easier access to the rear for my kids, and much much better cruising ability with lots less noise.

Out on the twisty roads, the NSX is much more feelsome, but in the same perfoarmance bracket. Would I ever drive one every day, hell no.

The New nsx? Well for that money it lacks rear seats and a decent WOW design. I'm totally cold looking at it even if NSX is in my blood. An that kills it for me right there.

Teslas? Its just a quick barge, more a AMG competitor with shitty US build quality, think CTS-V, but modern.

458? Thats a out and out sports car, every day, forget it.

I can't really think of anything competing with the i8 but the 991, and in the 991.2 its beat on everything but the 1/4mile. And if you did care about that, you should have gotten a Vette.

I can speak with some authority on the subject

I have owned an i8 for 8 years and have done 91k miles in it. I have a 2017 NSX and have done 27k miles. Both were bought with around 1,500 on the clock

At no time when driving the i8 on the road have I ever thought that I miss the greater power of the NSX

Whilst the NSX is better, there is just one service centre in London, which following my relocation to the North East is very inconvenient. Also, any repairs require the car to be taken to London. Parts such as the new headlight come in at £2,700 including fitting - it is a halo car for Honda and the price of the parts is a reminder that they sell the car at a thumping loss - 4 cars sold in the UK in 2021. Yet they fail to promote the car, so rather defeating the object of making it a halo car

To be brutal to own an NSX you have to be braced for repairs costing £10k to £20k - a gearbox I believe is around £30k - when I was young I drove cars I could not really afford and it is stressful worrying about such costs and it blunts your enjoyment

I really enjoy the i8 and did 1,100 miles in the last week on the motorway, having done so many miles in it I am totally familiar with everything and I find it so easy to drive ( heads up display on the i8 should be obligatory for all cars - so easy to control your speed) - like a comfortable pair of old shoes

I would add that to date the only fault has been the petrol cap failed to open

Keeping them as investments - I really don't believe such cars will be classics worthy of investment status - where the inconvenience of getting fuel for years to come, the complexity of servicing and finding specialist parts and the change in culture where throwing out carbon emissions will be seen as something to be ashamed of

Just to chime in on the tune vs warranty etc. My 2016 is way past warranty. However I have a service contract that doesn't seem to care if tuned or not. It's good up to 100k miles 5/2024. Have not used it yet. But it was sold by bmw dealership. The dealer says they just tell them the failed part/parts and contract replaces them. It is a bumper to bumper contract.

Now on nsx vs i8. The battery boost doesn't last long or do much besides a few seconds of push in the nsx. And we seemed to notice the car slowed quite a bit after it's tiny battery was gassed. However even with his battery done I couldn't beat him 0-60. Came close a few times but overall straight line can't keep up. On twisty roads I don't have any issues keeping on his tail. In fact once I put fat rubber on the i8 I'm very happy with it's performance. We both prefer the i8 in looks and interior. He's been looking for a low mile lci i8.

Hybrid is great for a daily, but personally I'm not a fan of hybrid in supercars.
