UPDATE: after a few minutes (when I looked again) the green LED only was flashing. After about an hour, it turned to solid green again i.e. not as per the manual. But the DisplayKey was fully charged, so it is working.

I guess the manual is just wrong

I can't speak for the Qi charger you are using (I use the Samsung one that came with my phone), but you can see if the key is charging by looking at the display - it changes from the battery symbol to the electricity bolt symbol.

We have it here in the UK, but I have heard that it hasn't yet made it over to the US.

In a nutshell, it's a key with a built in display constantly running the BMW i App.

Sort of. The biggest feature is the direct/instant connection to the i8.

The app is different in that it communicates via BMW's servers, and is therefore slow and dependent on mobile signals.

I certainly have no particular insight into this, but it's not hard for me to imagine that they hold off until the LCI in 2018, when hopefully the key could have more functionality than it currently does.
