I can't believe it took them so long to release the Spyder, which looks great btw.

I'll echo others' statements about how disappointing this car's numbers are. Unless you want the flashiest looking car for the money there are many better performance vehicles out there.

Wow, a whopping 12 more HP.

As a halo-car, it fails to connect with the ethos of the brand or to stir any kind of soul or inspiration, as a sports-car it fails to deliver character or respectable performance and as a hybrid-car/electrified vehicle, it is eclipsed by offerings from other brands.

The i8 is like a bad bet in Texas Hold'em.
The Flop came out and BMW has a losing hand, but they already bet so much in the pre-flop that they would rather just ride it out/bluff and hope for a better outcome for the Turn and the River.

The press release does not disappoint in sheer number of unnecessary words. Where a picture would do, BMW's copywriters decide to give us thousands of words as well. As if we are incapable of looking at the picture.

The range estimates are amazingly conservative. I had gotten 21.7 miles twice, and usually could get 18 on a full charge and not too many hills. The 33% increased net energy capacity (7.1 to 9.4 kW/h) would net 28 and 24 miles of range respectively.

Missing from the announcement are prices. Or did I miss it because of the verbosity of the release.

Hold up....

So what about the 2018 coupe models that have yet to be released? Still the same ol specs as the 17 MY? Is it a misprint?

Or are they skipping the 18s all together?

BMW is so stupid making such a rubbish car.

They should have at least given it a proper hybrid engine like the NSX. As is this car is a joke. It screams of second rate engineering.

If you are buying an electrified car for over $150k, then the 0-60 time should start with a 2 or 3 if it's a sports car (Acura NSX, Tesla Roadster), and low 4s if it's a practical sedan (Panamera eHybrid).

This car has all the inconvenience of a sports car but none of the performance benefit.

that would be the completely fabricated, non-existant, totally vaporware new Tesla Roadster, yes? The one that is at least four years away from its first production delay, and not meeting any of the hyperbolic specs? That's the Tesla Roadster you refer to? BMW could have followed Muskology and announced an all-new i8 with infinite range that does 0-60 so fast it literally turns back time and rips a hole in the space-time continuum, but I think they wanted to announce something that was actually buildable, that they were actually going to sell, that wasn't just a blatant attempt at grabbing another $250 million interest free loan from suckers, uh, "customers" willing to wait fruitlessly for nothing.

Perhaps, but the i8 is much cheaper and you can actually "buy" one, as opposed to "reserve".

Massive disappointment !

What a pitiful upgrade ?
As an existing owner, what would be the benefit in spending money for such a tiny improvement in performance ?
No doubt the Dealer service will remain as pathetic as ever !

Interesting. While I dont doubt the Tesla will face delays, I bet it’ll be just as fast as they say it is. And speaking of completely fabricated, non-existant vaporware, here’s BMW showing the i8 roadster concept in 2012.. even if Tesla takes 4 years, that’s a lot faster than 7

Has anyone taken delivery of the Model 3 yet? That roadster is a decade away if current Tesla delivery trends continue. :

After all, this is an old car, the design has been around about 8-9 years (first concept introduced in 2009).
No doubt it is a good car, certainly not the best at this price range.
Now that the i3 has been banned from sale due to the safety/impact issue, it's pretty obvious where this "project i" is heading now.
Not to mention, the market has shown that it just doesn't work.

The difference is that BMW didn't take any 50 000$ deposits back then, nor did they claim anything about the performance, or even if it was going to be produced.

Besides, it is being produced now, so how was the concept non-existant vapourware? Oh, and I'd love to bet against you

The i3 has a temp stop sale in place as BMW conducts a voluntary recall to fix a safety issue that effects 1% of the people who actually own the car. And the market shows it actually does work. Stop spreading BS that you have no data to back up.

Hardly a ban!

To pay the 150k this thing costs a person has to really really like it as for this price point there is a range or new/used cars are much better looking and would annihilate this thing performance wise

The hyperbole of this press release is astounding.

My personal favorite:

"Now available as a BMW Original Accessory the BMW TurboCord? Electric Vehicle Charger can be purchased at certified BMW Centers for $499 MSRP. This premium charging solution provides BMW i and BMW iPerformance drivers with the ultimate charging experience ? flexible dual-voltage (120 V / 240 V) capability and nearly three-times faster charging ? all in the smallest, lightest UL-listed portable charger available."

Ultimate charging experience?
