is it just me who finds the new i8 spider is a total disgrace? i mean, for $160,000 when it's all said & don't you can be in a used 570s/570GT or a 2017 R8 V10+. the i8 has been out for 4 years & now they decide to give a lousy "spider" version with a new ugly burnt shit copper color & ask $160,000. the i8 is now outdated & they just need to do a total revamp. i am beyond disappointed in BMW & how they could even dare ask that much for an i8. i mean they didn't even change the engine! they added like what 7 horsepower?!?! is that a joke?! please tell me i'm wrong & i will battle with whoever thinks i am.

I’m not disagreeing with you, but I’m curious what your opinion on a car like the Rolls Royce Wraith starting at $320,500 which does 0-60 in 4.4 seconds and a 12.5 quarter mile since you seem to be focused on price vs. performance

first off the rolls objective isn't to make a fast car. 4.4 0-60 is extremely quick, ESPECIALLY for what it's meant for- an old successful guy or a rapper. the i8 looks like a super car but doesn't perform like one. for me, if it looks like a dog it should be a dog.

I have to agree with SonnyParisi. I, too, am extremely disappointed at the lack of supercar performance for the supercar price. Sure, the Roadster looks amazing and exotic, but I declined to order one from my dealer, even though I had the #2 spot reserved. Besides the lack of performance, the pure electric range is 18 miles. That's pathetic.
The limited selection of colors, both exterior and interior, and the inability to order Individual colors, was the icing on the cake for me to cancel my order. In addition, with the total number of sales for the i8 Coupe last year totaling 500, there has to be a reason so many people are choosing other cars to buy. I commented on another i8 thread where a journalist compared the i8 to the Audi R8 Spyder: Quote:

I was waiting for the new i8 and was hoping for larger battery, higher performance and some new tech. The update had some of what I was hoping for but not enough to justify the price tag for me. Therefor I bough a 2016 for almost half the price
Comparing the i8 with the new R8? Running costs and the electric ride makes the i8 a much better daily. Most other areas the R8 beats it. |

Also, if one can exude some patience,
This time next year you'll be able to get some great deals on the roadsters

Why not buy a mustang, tune it up and you can have two for the price of one i8 and they’ll be as fast as an R8? Because buying cars and actually driving them is not all about numbers.

Like your logic (and your car; mine's on the way). But be careful, sarcasm is not always fully recognized on social media, though emojis can help

Love it! BTW, my comment regarding the inability for some to recognize sarcasm was primarily in reference to U.S. readers (see our current gun control debate for good examples ). With the greater sanity your citizens display on that subject and the unique style of British humor, I'm thinking it may be less of an issue on your side of the pond.

i think most of the anger comes from BMW overpricing and under delivering..
i.e. giving it supercar looks with GT performance and (now) outdated tech the drivetrain isn't impressive and the hybrid tech just isn't compelling today that said, these would all be forgiveable if it was priced correctly. and I still want one for the right price it should be priced at low $100s new. and secondary values and sales reflect that Last edited by mspeed; 03-10-2018 at 03:33 PM.. |

You pay your money, you take your choice...
One mans meat is another mans poison... I could go on with the analogies, but what a pointless debate. People buy what they want. For some that's an i8 spyder, for others a slightly used R8 spyder, for others an old Ferrari, etc, etc, etc. There's plenty of choice at whatever price point you set. Or if you still not happy do what Koenigsegg did - build your own |

Funny, I was thinking of this thread today when an Aston Martin (no idea what type but it was a 2017) came thundering past making an enormous noise. I gave chase and he basically pulled up and didn't want to play. It was a fine looking machine but didn't do much for me, the noise just sounded ridiculous for what should be a refined machine.
I haven't driven the i8 hard for some time due to weather and traffic but reminded myself, when giving it some thump, that the noise is really quite intoxicating - the engine noise (ok it might be synthetic) never drowns out the whine from the eMotor, it manages to sound like a straight 6 from an M3 with futuristic spaceship noises over the top. BMW could have made it louder like the Maxxhaust, and I believe they should let the buyer configure it but the factory noise, I believe, is the result of some clever thinking. If raw HP and big numbers are your thing then, as people have pointed out, you have a massive choice.
