My favorite tidbit about that video is how it was actually filmed driving a Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 which was also used in Ronin:

It was also the inspiration for this short film with Jay Leno. As a Los Angeles resident, I've taken this route many times, and it really is a blast if there is no traffic. Interestingly enough, this is the less famous side of Mulholland, east of the 405 in the Hollywood Hills. The more famous "The Snake" is on the west side of the 405 and they do not connect. I take the east route home sometimes. It takes longer, but at least I'm not in traffic and I get to enjoy the twisty roads of the Hollywood Hills.

A friend of mine was in high school when Bullitt came out. He worked at his dad's store, which was right next door to the movie theater where Bullitt was playing, and his friend, whose dad owned the theater, worked the front door.

He could hear the music leading up to the chase scene through the shared wall, so he would run next door and his buddy would let him in to watch it. He says he probably saw it a hundred times and he still isn't tired of it.

Steve McQueen also made a movie called Lemans. And although the movie sucked. The racing scenes were and still are some of the best on film.
It's worth it for that alone.

It's amazing that this movie got made at all. The racing scenes are great, but you are right, the movie itself is sketchy. How the movie got made is way more interesting than the movie itself. The racing scenes, however, set the bar.

While I don't really like Bay's ADD style of cutting and I don't think he quite captures the sensation of speed as well as someone like George Miller does, this is actually a pretty cool scene especially at 3:00 with the totally unnecessary 360 degree Ferrari submachine gun combo.

Hard to believe this badass is now a badly done blue cartoon character.

The Mustang(s) weren't stock though, the 390's had been hopped-up a little so as to be able to keep up with the stock 440 Charger's during the filming.

There's also a link between Bullitt and the French Connection car chase, as Bill Hickman who drove the Charger for Bullitt, was also the stunt driver for the French Connection chase.
Hickman was a great friend of James Dean, and had been Dean's performance driving tutor, and Hickman was driving the Ford Country Squire wagon with car trailer following Dean when Dean fatally crashed on their way to Salinas, and it was Hickman who pulled the dying Dean from the wreck.

Thanks, I just went down the James Dean death hole and it's very fascinating. I had always assumed it was an accident with no other parties involved, a case of a celeb driving too fast in the infamous Spyder. Knock on wood this never happens to me or anyone I know.
