SoCal storm and flooding

Are our Southern California people safe tonight? The warnings sound dire: Fear of cars and pedestrians or even houses swept away by flood waters or mud slides. I have a daughter in Mammoth who "doesn't follow the news" and works 12 hour-plus shifts as an operating room nurse there; I worry.

Everybody OK?

So far, so good. A light amount of rain has fallen in my area (Alta Loma, Inland Empire) and no serious wind to speak of. I have a pump set up in the back patio where we typically get flooded in heavy rain and a spare for the front porch if needed. I think we’ll be okay. Thanks for your concern, Llarry.

Nothing bad here in north San Diego county. Steady, light rain all day with the occasional moderate cloud burst. Not much wind to speak of.

Typical scare-you-to-death media. They never read The Boy who Cried Wolf. Much ado about nothing here.

Look at how a little bit of rain turns Los Angeles area freeways into a giant water slide:

That's because we don't know how to drive in just a little bit of rain.

Saw people speeding yesterday. Then a bit later, saw a Tesla totaled on the freeway. Too many people have egos about driving in the rain over here.

Most Californians haven't learned to adjust their driving in the wet, like the rest of the world does.

And 2,200 destroyed buildings. But no, nothing to see here. Let's plan a trip to Maui.

Yeah, I would definitely take a pass and let those who are coming in to help those who are definitely in need do what needs to be done. Taking a vacation in Maui at this time seems a bit premature.

I too think it's premature to plan on going anytime soon. I suspect that sooner rather than later we're going to be reading stories about what the lack of tourism is doing to the working class on the island. https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show...3&postcount=48

One way and another, they're in a really tough spot for the next few months.

Sunday night after dinner, I did this with a spade:
Fallers left that plate blocking the gutter since 8/4. I simply can’t figure out who did it though

I enjoyed my time playing in the gutter

Big storms can cause big issues in specific areas of a city while not affecting the other side of town, in case you haven’t ever experienced the dynamics of a big strong storm before.

And the LA metro area is pretty fricking big. Let alone when you start considering places like the Palm Springs area.

This is absolutely a case where you want to overstate what could happen, not understate it.

Well, I was prepared even though nothing really happened here. Better than being caught by surprise.

Back in 1976 I was stationed in the Navy on Guam. I had lived in the western Pacific for years and had experienced many typhoons. I think we had two "super typhoons" that year and the first one was no big deal. I got jaded and figured I didn't need to panic for the second one.

We lived on base in a little two story duplex made of concrete block and had floor to ceiling louvers everywhere to handle the tropical heat. Most of my neighbors got 4x8 plywood sheets to cover their windows; old hand Llarry said "Pfft! No big deal!"

It was a real big deal! The typhoon came right over the island, I actually (against all expert cautions) went outside in the eye of the storm as the wind temporarily moderated. The first half of the storm came from the front of the house, with 180 mph winds and heavy, heavy rain hitting those louvered windows and being driven though them. The water was coming in the louvers, being blown up to the ceiling and running down the wall on the other side of the room. I'd estimate the wind inside the house was 60 mph.

The only room in the house that did not have standing water was the bathroom. Oh, and we had a 3-month old baby. The power was out for a week and the phone for two weeks. That was the last time I ignored a storm warning!
