First Drive of i4 M50 by Out Of Spec Kyle -- Review & AMA

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I believe this may be the first US review on US soil. Can't wait until Kyle does a full review with range tests like he does in his other reviews.

Updated with post from Kyle (@kconner5):

Thanks for sharing! I had to dig up my old password to log in and thank you for sharing our video. Really loved the i4! Will have to do some more testing with all the nerdy stuff and of course we'll have a track handling battle of that vs Model 3 Performance.

Tomorrow I have my iX review going up.

Happy to answer any questions but I only spent a small amount of time with each vehicle up to this point.

Kyle

Highlights:

Highs: "extremely" solid/substantial feeling, very quiet, "spicy meatball" acceleration, it encourages you to drive faster.

Lows: missing buttons (ID8 stuff), low-speed braking, the transition between regen & friction blending when crawling at a stoplight, wheel gap.

He does say the low-speed braking may be more of the tire choice from BMW as he said the pedal feel is positive and brakes feel strong, but it may be under-tired for the weight because he says there's just no grip. Keep in mind it was a 55*F day which isn't ideal for summer tire performance.

He loves that you can fully disable the DCS/TCS

FYI, he also owns a Model 3 Performance.

Love your reviews! When you eventually do range testing, could you try Eco Pro mode? How does disabling the front motor affect range? Or otherwise affect the "personality" of the car?

What do you think about the 5000 lbs weight in terms of handling… do you think it hides its weight well?

On initial impression, would you say that this would appeal to the driving enthusiast more than say a Model 3 Performance?

Kyle, big fan of your videos! When will you be testing the eDrive40? I suspect that would be the better driver’s BMW if going 4s to 100kmh isn’t the be all end all for you. Also I live in Australia so the only snow the car will ever see is when we drive to a ski resort.

The i4 looks very good but… What is the matter with BMW new ride height? This car looks like monster truck when You look at wheel arches. Look at the front wheel. The cat can sleep on the front wheel. Almost every new BMW has enormous wheel gap. Even the new M models. New Range Rover has smaller wheel-fender gap. I don't get…

Battery pack reduces ground clearance.

Perhaps a software fine tuning thing with the brakes. It's not the temperature with summer tires. It's plenty warm for them at 55 degrees. All these things will just get better and better I imagine, but considering Tesla came out over a decade ago BMW is a bit late to the EV game so hopefully it get ironed out rather quickly with updates.

Curious about a comparison with a Tesla Model 3. Changed out our M340i for a Tesla but have a 2 year lease. Figured that was enough time for when more i4s will be at dealerships and can decide on sticking with Tesla or going back to BMW. So far the Model 3 has been great with no issues. I will say it’s tough for me to want to buy a car that requires gas anymore. Don’t get me wrong I have my E46 M3 still but to not have to go to stations, smog checks, engine/fluid repairs makes me want full electric moving forward.

Late ICE BMW also get this excessive wheel gap, especially the xDrive models.

In viewing the video more in detail, it looks like the car is on the Goodyear All Season tires, which would impact tire grip.

That scene where he does an initial slow speed rolling full acceleration is incredible, definitely a point-n-shoot car in traffic

The iX felt like a “new” interior designed from the ground up
The i4 seemed like they built on the existing architecture. Too much familiar and design that is growing old on me

I was a sucker for the one touch dimming/smoked sun roof on the ix. I also liked the floating arm rest, door handles and steering wheel. Infotainment options are plentiful, but it seems like they went away with the simplistic design in favor of an android look. Of course ix was slower and steering felt quite disconnected. But both cars were well insulated imo and a pleasure to
drive.

Good job with review OP

Kyle used to own a non performance Model 3. Did he upgrade? Nonetheless, the guy on this video is comparing it to his M3P. He said the M50 definitely doesn't have the initial acceleration snap of his Tesla.
