Extensive article comparing the various AWD systems utilized by auto manufacturers

Always a polarizing topic of discussion, especially this time of year. Lots of engineering details for those interested.

surprised they didn't mention the gtr attesa system. front engine, rear transmission, second drive shaft to send power forward when needed. Not sure if there is any benefit since it has pretty much the same weight distribution as a g80 xdrive.

Yeah, they haven't mentioned many great Japanese AWD systems, such as Acura's SH-AWD, GTR's ATTESA E-TS AWD, Subaru’s AWD with ATV... etc. Probably because they only sell parts for Euro cars.

In 1987, I owned an Audi Coupe. Loved that car and drove it into the ground.

Would have really like to own the quattro version shown leading the article but quattro was new back then and an expensive option. That particular Audi GT Coupe Quattro was $80K in 1987!

You omitted the pioneers of Japanese performance AWD systems as Mitsubishi was doing torque vectoring before almost everyone else with their S-AYC.

Good point, I'm just too mad at Mitsubishi for what they've become after glorious EVO and GTO days...

I've still got 2 Legnum VR-4's which basically have EVO4 drivetrains from factory but with a 6A13TT engine.

One has an Evo 8 6 speed and SAYC diff in it, the other is the stock 5 speed manual with Evo 7 RS rations and standard AYC diff. Fun cars but the hollow shaft that drives from the gearbox to the transfer case is a weak point if you're pushing a bunch of power and as it is hollow with fine tolerances it can't be made bigger or much stronger.

Bonus points are no torque steer (I'm looking at Audi here) and very balanced

Well, they did do Mini...but then again, Mini is BMW, and they didn't do Rover, Jaguar, AM, or anyone else in Yurp other than just the selected few they did.

It would be nice to have this information on at least ALL of the major manufacturers, excluding the smaller ones that just don't push out the same volume.

Nice I used to love those and Galants (which reminded me a E36 sedans lot), shame on Mitsubishi for ruining it.
