It is common knowledge and has been reported at length that the Chinese refer to Trudeau as "the little potato"......

Canadian Ambassador to China resigns......

...or was shit canned depending on what media you care to check. So McCallum has been a Member of Parliament and held Cabinet positions in previous liberal governments. He has had extensive media training and decades of experience dealing with media.

There is no way he made these remarks without Trudeau's blessing or more likely instruction. This was a clumsy attempt to manage the Chinese and it blew up in the Canadian Governments face badly.

I get the sense he has a reputation for tipping a glass too, but my sources and experience tell me that he wouldn't have shot his mouth off on something this high profile without some direction.

He is saying something similar. Even Rex however, is wise enough to suggest unnamed PMO influences and doesn't refer to "his sources" (Even though he might actually have some.).

you don't know me and I don't know you, my question was why the name calling....it's so easy to sit behind a keyboard and use strong language, I'd like to think and try to treat people the same way as if I was in the same room as them. If you disagree with me fine, say so and say why but calling me blowhard or some of the other stuff I've been called on this forum isn't on.

Another Canadian arrested in China

Un-named Canadian arrested for fraud in China, unrelated business as usual or is China turning up the volume on Canada after McCallum turfed?

We live close enough together that I'd be happy to call you some names to your face. But I suspect you've been called worse than anything I would come up with, and you likely aren't so thin-skinned in person.

I'm not thin skinned, I just don't see the need for it. I've not been disrespectful to you.

McCallum actually did Trudeau a favour. He made public some statements that were on the minds of many Canadians. His firing allowed us to keep the peace with the US. McCallum statements along with his replacement will pave the way for Canada to reset the relationship with China. It almost seems planned.

I quite certain it was planned, he is a seasoned vet with politics and media and he would've been briefed before he did the interviews. I think it was an error on the governments part in dealing with a big ugly international issue. I'm not sure it will make things better but time will tell.

Agreed, I hardly think this is something McCallum just came up with all on his own...I do think it was planned.

Given that this sentiment is shared by a lot more people than just us...if this was all scripted then wouldn't the players see through this for what it is? And if so, why would that help?

I think this was an ill-conceived plan in the PMO, McCallum would've been briefed before talking to the media especially in the middle of this crisis. It then blew up in the governments face. McCallum had to be the sacrificial lamb, and I'm concerned that there will likely be long term repercussions for us with China and possibly the USA. I guess time will tell what and how bad the damage will be.

That's my thoughts too, I cannot fathom how this helped us at all because I believe everyone sees through this, so all it really seemed to do in the end was:

1. Throw an unneccesary wrench into the extradition case, pissing off the US.
2. Give the Chinese (who were busily painting themselves into a corner with their actions on a world scale) additional leverage and a way for them to say some of their actions were justified.
3. Do absolutely nothing towards getting Meng off our soil and onto someone else's (whether that be US or Chinese, I really don't care, though given China's actions, I'd prefer US soil and preferably same treatment as Canadians are getting).
