Tesla Model S Plaid does Nürburgring in 7:30.9
So Tesla Model S Plaid sets a new electric car record at Nürburgring with a time of 7:30.909. According to Elon completely unmodified, I would say pretty impressive for ~5000 lbs. electric car...

pretty impressive. about the same time as a C8 z51 and faster than an F90. Sounds like these new plaid motors have overcome the cooling issues that have plagued tesla for so long when it comes to ring times.

Well... it's impressive because it's an electric car, they had to overcome tons for tech issues to achieve it... How many other electric cars for regular consumers you know that can beat this time?

I have never seen the value in chasing numbers, not at the dragstrip or on the racetrack. Not that there is anything wrong with it, but I'll take fun over fast all 7 days of the week.
Good for them, but keep it. |

Plaid did extremely well considering that M5 CS (7:29.6 time) is stripped down, the quickest and most powerful BMW sedan ever made. In addition, Plaid weighs 650 lbs more than M5 CS and had all standard equipment w/o CS weight reduction...

It still has nearly 1200HP and still couldn't beat the not-stripped-down AMG GT 4 door with only 630 HP.

The Nürburgring is not all about horsepower, plus I'm pretty sure that 630HP is underrated. Model S is an old 10-year-old platform, give it new 4680 battery cells and 4th motor and it will be game over for ICE competitors.

Have you guys driven a Tesla? It's fast but that's it!!! There is no fun! No sound, No feel, No Soul, No luxury or detail or even German comfort! |

I thought Tesla was supposed to smash all the N’Ring records…
Based on all the hype built up by Elon and his legion of TSLA fan-girls, this result is pretty subpar. Don’t get me wrong, objectively it’s an impressive result, however relative to the hype that was built around this car by its own supporters… it’s not very impressive at all when you consider its power to weight ratio. But then again why would we expect a company with literally 0 racing heritage or even a reputation for driving dynamics to suddenly beat any records, let alone by a meaningful amount?

So why did it break down?
And why does the title of the video say "Model S Plaid Electric Prototype" The point why for example BMW exploits the m5 as a ring taxi is to show it can drive a track at high speed any day, all day long. Not to show how fast they can have a sedan drive around a track and subsequently have it towed off the track I mean this is better than a few years ago when the model S couldn't even complete 1 lap without going into all sorts of fault modes protecting the battery, but it seems that progress is....slow.

but in reality... idk anybody who would buy an f90, rs6, or e63 and be like "you know what i want to track this thing too". Its maybe 0.01% of buyers that actually do that. |

The people I see driving the model 3 performance at local autocross events look to be having fun. So you are claiming that they are not?

Here you go: https://insideevs.com/news/487704/te...7-minute-ring/ It is impressive, just not so relative to the hype that Tesla and its fans have been building. The same fan base that paraded Randy Pobst in a literal Model S Plaid Race Car passing novice supercar owners at Laguna Seca as Tesla taking the scalps of those cars
