This morning we woke up in NYC and got ready to come home. We had a 1PM flight out of LGA to O'Hare. We'd heard that security had been stepped up and to leave ample time to get through it at the airport, so we checked out of the hotel and grabbed a hired car to LGA, leaving the hotel at 9:45. Turned out we hit little traffic and our boarding passes were both marked TSA Pre-check. We were sitting at our gate at 10:30. Barely 45 minutes from hotel to gate. Everything was looking good.

At 11AM United cancelled our flight due to "severe weather conditions in our route network." Oddly enough, it was the only Chicago bound flight cancelled. I suspect United had another reason to cancel and simply blamed the weather to get out of paying for accommodations for the passengers. In any case, I stood in line to rebook and was told the only other flight they could get us on was a United flight out of Newark to Chicago. The nice lady behind the counter offered to give me a voucher for the hired car to Newark and we had 4 hours, so I agreed. The ride would have cost $105, so I wasn't complaining too much.

We collected our previously checked bags and met the car with no problems. Got to Newark around 12:30 and again had TSA Pre-check. We got to the gate with plenty of time for lunch. The flight went ok. We had Economy Plus, so the legroom was decent and we got to Chicago on time.

Weather in Chicago was 49F with rain and 25MPH winds. Neither of us had jackets and I was in short sleeves. After freezing for 15 minutes or so our parking shuttle showed up and got us to our car. Then we started the 3 hour drive home in mostly heavy rain. We got home to a burned out garage door opener and a dead a/c compressor. Luckily it's only supposed to hit 60F tomorrow, so we caught a break. But now I need to find someone to replace the garage door opener and fix the damn a/c.

Cliff Notes: My day sucked, but it could have been worse.

Just further proof that I have the absolute worst luck when traveling. (But sometimes I catch little breaks.)

Garage door opener is cheap to fix and you'll probably be happy in the end because you'll be able to get a smart opener.

AC is probably something simple and inexpensive. Don't sweat it. Got home safe, life it good.

Tru dat. We needed a new door opener anyway. And I think the compressor is still under warranty. And considering we could have been on the hook for a very expensive last-minute overnight stay in NYC, we lucked out there, too.

Sitting here now with an A'bunadh and soda and a fan blowing on me, I'm not a hurtin' pup.

Bad luck...... should be in another thread about first world problems but I can sympathize.....but remember to count your blessings or whatever a non-religious person may call them

AC compressor = $$$$$. Basically a new unit.

I had my garage door opener and AC unit compressor die two years ago so, i know the feels.
