Ordered a 2019 i3s Rex

With 2020 production still unknown (for some reason) and the complete lack of loaded i3s inventory in SoCal Dealerships, I ordered a 2019 today.

Production is going until Oct 15th so it wasn't too late to order. Guessing this will be one of the last off the line if 2020's don't happen. Either way, I don't think anyone is expecting option / feature changes in 2020 and it will be the last year undoubtedly.

She's coming with everything:
  • Capparis White i3s Rex w/ Tera Dark Truffle Vernasca Leather
  • Tech + Driving Assist Package
  • Light Eucalyptus Wood Trim
  • BMWi Blue Seatbelt Strap
  • Moonroof
  • Wireless Charging
  • harman/kardon Premium System

Mark this i3 #3 for me. Really still the perfect car for my needs. I'll post the deal later when its closer to delivery.

I ordered a Black i3s BEV, with Tera, HK, Tech, heat pump, dark oak, and gloss black wheels. This will be my 6th i3.

My order has seems to have reverted back to "ORDER RECEIVED. Your order has been received, and we're making space in the production schedule."

This is going backward.

Seams perfectly aligned with BMW EV strategy!

(They will get going on it, eventually)

Mine is due to arrive in September-Oct. Tested my 2017 i3 rex against a 2019 i3S rex on the Dragy. About a .70 sec difference 0-60mph. This is identical to My 2016 BEV. So I am hoping my 2019 i3s BEV will be another half second quicker or so. Cant wait.

My 2019 is on a boat south of the hurricane headed to the Panama Canal.

Also got a loaded up 2019 BEV not knowing what was going on with the 2020's. My dealer had an unconfigured 112 status immediately and it was built within a week. Then it sat in Bremerhaven for 3.5 weeks before being loaded. I expect sometime this month it will be here after 2month wait.

This will be our 4th i3, this time an i3s, going to mildly hot hatch this one as my daily.

I suspect mine was initially in the same situation. I was given an immediate 112 status but then rolled back to 87. The CA told me production got backed up two weeks but that I did have a production slot confirmed still. Now their system is again showing I'm at 111 with week 39 production Sep. 23, 2019 - Sep. 29, 2019. Not sure what 111 vs 112 is though if I've got a production slot already.

So... I've got a while to wait being I'm on West Coast. Maybe Christmas?

i3s fully loaded inventory low?

Strange....

My 2019 i3s rex, fully fully fully loaded (except it had the oak trim instead of the eucalyptus)

Had been sitting in a warehouse in Boston for seven months, when I decided to upgrade my 2014 i3rex. As a result, the 12V battery was dead. AND, one of the eight HV voltage cells had to be replaced within the first three weeks because of the dreaded "Drivetrain Error". Arrggghh.

Seems they're not much in demand on the East Coast.

Not at all.
i3 sales are low in the US, and have been dropping each year post 2015. Just 385 were sold in the US last month, or roughly, 1 per month for each of the ~350 dealers BMW USA has:
https://insideevs.com/news/368729/ev...d-august-2019/

With that sales rate, most dealers don't keep any in stock.
The last time I leased one, I had custom ordered, and waited ~2 months for it to be built and delivered to me.

The other week I tried to test drive i3-S, and not a single dealer near me had one in stock.

Or anywhere else in the US, where we are spoiled for EV choices.

i3 does continue to sell well in Europe, though.

Same thing around SoCal. A lot of dealers have i3 but pickings get thin quick when you look for i3s. Then by color choice, you're pretty much out of luck. Forget trying to find Light Eucalyptus Wood Trim and Blue Seatbelt Strap with a Tera. Just not going to happen without an order. Everything I found in inventories had MSRPs around 55-56k. Pretty far away from the 59k fully build ones. My 2017 in the same spec was found (in Arizona I believe) and brought in. That had been at the lot for a while apparently. But this time around it was no dice. Nothing came close. Its a shame the i3 doesn't sell well here. I get people asking me about mine in parking lots seriously one a month. About half think it's a brand new car just coming out

I get about about 1/4th that don't realize its electric. Cramming into compact spaces and zipping around congested streets is what the i3 excels at. Seriously its the perfect car for half of LA commuters and they just don't realize it. I bet I've sold a dozen over the years just showing people my car and telling then what it's like.

---
If you're listening BMW - this is what gets people to talk to me. They see my nixie tubes. Everyone wants to know about the Nixie's and then they ask about the car. Make this an option.

Fluid Black with Deca dark seems to overrun the dealer lots. So many fluid blacks, all with deca dark. Finding a Giga or Tera option is rare, then they don't have the Tech package which is a travesty with that tiny iDrive and no ACC. Shameful. Who configures like this?!

My 2nd i3 BEV should be arriving at the dealer any day now. I actually wanted a base Fluid black with Deca dark trim and no options. I don't need any other options so I ordered it that way. My goal was to find the cheapest transportation that I could find allowing me to use the carpool lane.

With the latest MF and loyalty credits from BMW, my monthly payment will be a "shameful" $161 before tax. That's O.K. by me

Geez I'm jealous! Here in the deep south, where pickups and SUVs abound and EVs are almost not to be seen, the best I'm going to be able to do on a pretty reasonable i3s build is just under $500/month with tax included!

Congratulations. I just had my split moonroof tinted with black (limo tint) ceramic film. Even though it comes lightly factory tinted and there are manual slide screens for both sides....light and heat was still coming through. Major difference post tint!!

I also tinted ALL windows, every piece of glass and did ceramic on the front side windows too. The car went from unbearable in the heat & sun, to nice and comfy!!!

Did you do the windshield too? How much for the ceramic all together? I think I'm going to do this when my new one arrives.

Just curious, why have you had as many i3's as the number of years they have been out?

I did not do the windscreen, as a few friends that have done this have all complained that many lighting conditions make seeing out the glass look like cheap, plastic sunglasses. Also, all it would take is the tiniest imperfection, lint, teeny bubble...and it would be ALL that I would focus on :-O

I tinted all glass, besides the windscreen. The tint shop wanted $800, but I negotiated to $600. Job took 3.5 hours. Looks soooo good and the heat reduction is staggering.

I know BMW wanted to keep weight down (and BMW is also notoriously cheap!!!), but ALL cars especially electric or hybrids should come with thermal glass. Lexus and Ford/Lincoln offer it free on many models as does Porsche and Land Rover.

Car entered production. Actually, it entered production last Thursday but its still not showing any updates. Figured it would be done by the end of September.
