Same issue
Same problem as Malibu. It went down about 2 months ago. I complained to BMW about all the little problems I have been having with my car. I got a check for $7k. Better than nothing!!

Let them take a look and take it back for the fix, let's you do it at your leisure and should be able to guarantee a good loaner.

I had the pressure sensor replaced after seeing a warning light, but no loss in power. After receiving the i8 back, I went a few weeks without needing to refuel but the release didn't work, again.
It is frustrating, but I have gotten really good at accessing the manual release through the trunk because this issue has been going on for a while since I travel extensively. Once I get back in the states, I will take the car back to the dealer again. This will be the third time it's been in for the same issue. I'll post their latest findings. |

If this comes back after sensor replacement, it makes one wonder if the real issue isn't somewhere else - wiring harness or whatever. It seems odd that some cars seem to have this issue repeatedly, while others don't at all (knock on wood).

For those that have experienced this issue, do you recall the level of fuel in the tank when the problem occurred?
I have just had a software update done that was supposed to have fixed the problem. Pre update it did it when I had run the tank to empty, and it got stuck on 25%. Post software update, I have just had the same problem - this time stuck at 95%. Tank more or less empty (5 miles remaining). The theory being that it only does it on very low fuel levels. If this is the case then I'd live with it rather than have the car disassembled (with all the potential issues that reassembly might cause). Any input gratefully received before I drop my car off again. |

I kept checking at various levels and found the problem to be intermittent and not predictable in terms of fuel level (I tested at random times, wouldn't open maybe 80% of the time). I wonder if the software fix is really a bodge to compensate for a whacky pressure sensor or fixes a different problem not related to the sensor at all? You could do a manual release, fill up then try the release button a few times - your problem could be different to mine.

NGR I think you're right about the software fix being a bodge - I suspect they've told the software to 'ignore' a 25% stop, on the basis that in most cases it then goes on the release properly. Mine then sticks at 95%...
It was fine this morning when I tested with half a tank of fuel - opened more or less immediately after a 35 mile drive, and I'll do it again when I head home later and the weather is warmer (more vapour). Yours not working 80% of the time is conclusive that it's not fuel level related! What worries me is that it re-occurs even after sensor replacement - that combined with the fact that not every car has the issue suggests an element of chance in their approach to fixing it!;-) Has yours been ok since the sensor was replaced? BMW called this morning and have booked me in for fuel sensor replacement next week (for a week). I think the approach is first to try the software/reset fix, then replace fuel sensor (seems a bit hit and miss - I wonder if they ever get away with just the software fix!). Let's see what happens! Mine's been absolutely fine since the sensor was replaced but not sure if they did something else while it was in pieces.
The technician said the reading was off the chart so pretty conclusive the sensor or something connected was sending duff info to the computer - that's what makes me think they could just be doing a software work-around basically saying the readings are so far out that they can't be true. Having said that, such a workaround could lead to a scenario where there was high but possible pressure in the system and you could get a fuel cap blowing out when you unscrewed it! Don't know if BMW would risk that - that's what the whole system is designed to avoid!

A part had to be ordered since the first "fix" didn't work. I don't recall what part was installed, but it has worked everytime since.

Same situation, found the emergency release in the rear boot. Can't face going to the dealership because they are so awful, so just use the emergency release now as a normal opening system !

Hopefully the tank venting is actually working and you don't get a cap blowout, I'd press the button anyway just in case it operates a vent valve before releasing/not releasing the flap!

Apprerently this is not an issue on new cars (mine is 2015), but when/if they give me an i8 courtesy vehicle I will be attempting to replicate the failure mode of my vehicle - i.e. very low fuel level. Last edited by 88i8; 06-13-2017 at 11:08 AM.. |

For what it's worth, my 17 plate was back getting the latest software update and was given a 66 plate i8 loaner... the loaner had the flap glitch (stuck at 25%)... so don't know about 'new' cars not being affected....

gas cap
This is really annoying. BMS says to wait 8 minutes to see if it will open on its own. In NJ, gas station attendants are not too happy about someone just waiting and taking up space at the station. The only practical option is to get out of the car and use the trunk emergency tab.
Have people found this glitch happens after driving a certain amount of time? Like if driving for less than 10 minutes may never happen, but over that is high risk for the glitch? Or any other risk factors to avoid? |

My 2017 i8 has started with same issue, always when low on petrol after a long drive. It's booked in for service today, they have just called and said it needs a new sensor and need to keep car overnight to remove/refit fuel tank... I will keep you posted, hopefully it doesn't take days!
