iX Value and Depreciation
Hi everyone.
My wife and I are long time BMW enthusiasts (over 40 owned). Anyway, the iX is something she wants, and I'll admit the idea of it is something as I am open to. I like the front, the back, but not a fan of the side profile. We've owned an i3 and an X5 45e in the past. I love electric cars, but I also love ICE (hence my M2CS). The wife also does love the X5m idea I've thrown at her. 2 different cars I know but we love them all. Anyway, I've got the opportunity to have the first iX allocated to a local dealer. They also presented the option of an X5m with very pretty discount. My thoughts for discussion are: Initially, what types of discounts do you think dealers will be willing to do on the iX? We have no idea what MSRP will be with options, but I'd imagine I'd spec one of the 50i models for near 90k. Next is depreciation. Will this be more in line with say normal BMW depreciation curves or i3 depreciation curves? I don't want this to be a repeat of the i3 depreciation. Great car, got it at a steal lease (and that's what made it great). If the iX leases well, then I think I'd be open to that. I wish I could see one in the flesh, but I don't think they are doing viewings in my area. |

I have BMWs for a long time including many of the ones you mention, including M2 CS, i8, X5M……
I fully expect this car to depreciate similar to other BMWs and if I were in the market, would wait until the leases are aggressive. I would also expect the X5M to depreciate a lot, even with a good discount upfront. This is assuming the market will be back to the pre pandemic state within the next 12+ months. BMW is not a brand that holds its value well, except with some niche models. The I8 is a great example, that was even touted as their halo car and it still depreciated very strongly. Looks like you and I hope for the M2 CS to be that unicorn niche model…… |

The iX xDrive50 is USD 120K fully loaded, before taxes. At least that's the price here in Norway, where electric cars are exempt from any kind of taxes and fees. The xDrive 40 is 97K, fully loaded as well.
Having seen the car in person yesterday, I'd say wait until you can see it in person and maybe even test drive it before you commit to buying one. This is not your typical BMW, and it's a far cry from the X5.

Without a doubt you can expect i3 levels of depreciation. The single biggest expense in this car is the battery and that technology is rapidly changing. Your car can (and will) be made obsolete much quicker than an ICE, and that will contribute to the depreciation. In my opinion, an ix with a sticker of $100k will be worth about $38k in 36 months.
Solid state lithium batteries (15 min charge and 80% more range) are expected to arrive in as little as three years. |

I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to let us know once they sign the lease what the residual value of the ix is. Then I could start planning to buy a returned lease Ix

On an iX version Fully Charged, the cost of the car is quoted as USD112K. For a 28000 miles /45000 Km lease over three years, you pay USD54K. So roughly 50%. Notice, however, that electric cars are exempt from taxes here, which makes the leasing generally more expensive, because the leasing companies cannot deduct the VAT. The calculation is very similar for the i4 M50 and the iX3, also roughly 50%. By comparison, for the plug-in hybrids, which do pay VAT, the proportion is about 55% residual, i.e. you pay 45% for the same leasing period and miles included. Again, I know in the US you get better deals normally, but that might give you an idea.
