Its just marketing for me... the i3 is really fast up to 50 kph, maybe even faster than the M3 but after that it has no chance at all.
Just look at the numbers 0-100 kph is more than 7 seconds on the i3 versus what - 4.8s en the M3 I think. |

Sorry everyone, the i3 to me is just an electric Smartcar with a $50k price tag. The car is fugly looking. Why not make an electric 235i or maybe a 320i? Why is it that electic cars with exception of Fisker and Tesla are always ugly?
So the i3 gives you giggles from 0 to 45mph, the guys in the M3 we're laughing hysterically from 45 to 160mph. |

some of you m3 owners need to get a grip. i don't understand why so many of you are getting so bent out of shape.
by no measure is an m3 slow. everyone knows the m3 will beat an i3 any day of the week, no need to trash talk i3 because of it. this video shows the achievements of tech in i3's and its usefulness in real world usage. does this video hurt your pride? go get a penis enlargement

Its not a car I would buy normally...but it would probably make a great city car.
I think the point that BMW were trying to make was that the i3s instant performance was available to anybody, anytime...no skill just press the pedal and you will see off most every car unless they are ready to drag off the line. |

Meaningless video IMO.
First observation, the i3 had a small jump on the M3, which is sufficient to put it ahead at the start. Second, as so many other have said, the M3 did not have traction. More torque would not have helped without more traction... The big question though, how come the i3 has so much better traction off the line? |

This is definitely a 100% tq issue. The I3 is an electric car so it has 100% tq available at 0 rpm. It will out accelarate almost any car at these speeds of the line. The M5 got beat by a Tesla Model S in the exact same competition. Does anyone have any idea what these races would like rolling at 40 or top end? The i3 would get owned not to mention handling, driveability, sound and every other performance variable.

I think there is a BMW civil war going on between i and M in this comment section...
Come on guys, both of these cars are impressive. The point of this vid is really about what an electric car can do, not that which car is better. They serve very different purposes, but they are both BMW |

A few take aways here:
1. S65 does in fact sound glorious 2. It sounds even better from behind the dashboard 3. The clown driving it was spinning his wheels half way through 1st gear 4. i3 wat? 5. Great sense of humors expressed by all parties involved 6. i3 JB4 tune is on the way and it will change everything |

Would like to see a 335d added to the short I3 and M3 tussle. Mix in some diesel fuel to the electrons and gas contest.

New tires, FWD, traction control activated? The M would have done just fine had the traction control not been deactivated. |

Wow...imagine if you had bought a late model, say '12-'13 M3, and then saw this video of it being left off the line by an i3? Serious shrinkage going on.
But wait, M3 sounds good, which is more important than performance anyway. So, nevermind... |

Reading between the lines...yes, motorsports (at least for me) has a lot to do with the whole package, including the screaming motors...but I think Chris has a good point (last line of his review)
http://www.carbuzz.com/news/2013/11/...-Mind-7717036/ I can't imagine watching a whole race with nothing but tire noise for the whole thing...but I think EV racing will be coming... And I definitely agree, this was a complete marketing stunt to make the i3 appear at least something "performance" oriented since it is a BMW. But this was completely having to do with the power to weight, traction, and inertia. I could beat an M3 for the first 10-15 feet on my bike in wet.
