Owning an i8 without charging

Hello,

What are your thoughts about owning an i8 without having access to a charger? I know the car can charge itself in sport mode but I live in an apartment complex so I wouldn't be able to charge.

Thank you!

When I test drive the car, I asked the sales the same question. He said it is totally fine!

you may have to give up some efficiency and performance - the little 1.5 petrol engine would have to do all the work of charging the HV battery so it in turn can power the front electric motor. having to drive the generator that charges the HV battery means theres a little less power to drive the back wheels. something would have to give as the energy to drive the car has to come from somewhere, so perhaps you just get the performance of a heavy mini? With a fully charged HV battery, the electric motor can give you some miles of all electrtic driving before the petrol engine kicks in - or supplement the petrol engine and this is mostly whats makes the i8 very efficient. Could you not charge it in a nearby car park at work - its only takes about 3-4 hours for a full charge of its relatively small battery?

Works fine and makes no sense at all. PHEVs are only getting to the consumption values indicated with daily charging and <100 km per day driving. The i8 is an efficiency masterpiece. As a potent sports car there are much better value for money options. Can't you get parking with an outlet?

I know two owners who never plug in their car.

...which is why PHEVs have such a bad reputation. This proves people right who say they should be treated like an ICE and consumption measured with empty batteries. So I always promote buying a PHEV only if there is a plan to charge daily.

But as said, technically there is no issue at all never charging the car. With Sports Mode used in normal low load driving you would also have pretty full batteries for boosting all the time.

I have a Tesla too and I could plug in the i8 with a higher amperage charger that the govt would pay for by I don’t even bother
