Half true.

It's all about image. Pretending/making it look like you care about being green is "in" right now.

Look at Tesla...their sales are booming, their stock price shot up, and for what? Their car isn't exactly all that special, and the Tesla S can be optioned for well over $100k! (starting price of 60k is great, but close to double when fully loaded!).

From what I can tell (at least from what I can see in LA), it's all about image, not actually saving money by not getting gas.

Still, WHAT THE FUCK were management at BMW thinking allowing a BMW without double round headlamps????????????????????????????????????????? ???????

The Audi lights in the pictures that leaked a few days ago, they at least looked good. Bizarre for a BMW, but they looked good. The U inside the U at the premier just completely turned me off. I was sooooo excited for this car, but I can't anymore. It is NOT a BMW without double round headlamps. I don't give a shit what BMW says is BMW i's own design or interpretation or whatever nonsense. This is NOT a BMW.
Agree, the corona rings give it a distinct BMW character, even from distance. Giving it these Audi-like highlights shows a lack of self-confidence, which is a characteristic that BMW is displaying more and more these days. Its as if they don't have a vision. Their philosophy seems to be to do whatever works for the other two competitors.

I'm sure there's a degree of that, but also, to some people the approach, and the technology, and the execution of the idea is also exciting and fascinating.

From an engineering standpoint, doing more, with less, is a beautiful concept. This is why so many of the the other Hybrid cars and other EV's like the Tesla are still just old-school thinking, they do more - with more... more motors, more batteries, more weight, more money..

I think some of us are missing the point. And a 4.4 0-62mph isn't slouch, even at $136k.

In California it's a $125k car and those are everywhere. Everywhere! They'll sell a decent amount of i8's I'm sure.

Really missing the squared coronas in this design, takes away a lot of the appeal of thre front.
But if you look at the pics of the blue one, from the side it looks like it has them.

Besides that I think it will sell at this price tag, its a very exclusive looking car with the scissor doors and middle engine design.
And as said before beeing green is "in"...

I think both price and performance is reasonable if you compare this to a R8.
I8 is around 10K more expensive compare to an auto R8, but saves a lot more on tax plus huge fuel saving on the long run. so the price difference is not that significant in the end. 0-62 is 4.4s (I8) vs 4.5s (R8). 4 seater vs 2 seater. other things are all pretty subjective, I personally think I8 looks better and is a lot more interesting in terms of design and concept.

For 130k i would have expect the same design with A LOT of power around M5 or M6 standards with a small electric engine for some hybrid features, but definitely not an amazing design with a POS engine and features, i dont care if it has LED or laser headlights, what use is that for when you look fast but can get smoked by V6 mutang or camaro
this is one of the most egregious posts i've seen in recent memory

+1 people seem to forget how slow and expensive an R8 V8 is

Looks very sweet (besides the wheels). But, it would've been nice if they had made this the supercar, R8 competitor, etc etc that so many BMW fans have yearned for, instead of the gimmicky car for a handful of rich global warmers. It's a very sexy car, and will turn many heads, but u are essentially paying double the price for better performing cars just to say u have an electric car (only partially). Wish they would just drop 600hp in it : )
