Unintended Tailgate Opening
I was hosing down the rear of my iX today and the tailgate opened- twice. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Before you ask, neither me feet nor was any spray directed under the rear "tag" area.

Did you happen to have the key fob in your pocket? For years on forums across various vehicles I’ve read people complain of phantom hatch opening and it usually turns out to be a button press on a fob in their pocket, from kneeling down or whatever.

I have had this happen thanks to the handsfree operation. Same way the doors sometimes lock and unlock when using the power washer over the handles.

Yes, and really annoying. I was connecting a charger on the left side of the car to the charger port on the right and the cable was sliding under the rear of the car on its way to the port. Triggered the "kick to open" behavior and bumped up into a chain link fence. Doesn't seem like there's a way to stop the tailgate from opening when it's on its way except for pressing extremely hard against it ... feels like a design flaw to me.

Would the answer be to not have the keys nearby when washing the car (easy at home...a little harder elsewhere maybe)?
I hadn't thought of a charging cable setting off the kick sensor. That's useful to know. Last edited by Okanagan; 04-12-2023 at 10:18 PM.. |

I’m assuming you’re the same person that posted this on the Facebook group? Even if you don’t have your key fob, your digital key acts as the same thing. Like Hugo said, i’m betting the water is hitting the controls pad of the door handle as if you were opening your door.

i dont think so. My IX3, does not seem to have the kick function ( thought it was standard feature !! ) but have not succesfully opened my boot that way. on the other hand, i find my boot left open so many times,( even in Tesco's car park! ) when i return to my car! yes it was shocking in the beginning and not getting quite used to this! wonder if BMW would re-design and offer to all users. Its definately a flaw in the key fob. Happens when you put them in your pocket and are within range. Last edited by Crystalcat15; 05-17-2023 at 06:40 PM.. |

The buttons are fairly exposed on any BMW key fob. One of the first things I do when getting a new car is put the key fob in a case, not only to keep it from looking like cr@p after a week in my pocket but to reduce the possibility of an accidental button push.
