So what if it costs the dealer to install 8.5? If that's what it takes to make the sale, they ought to do it. I suggest you work the cost of the update into your negotiations

No, they don’t ought to do it. Either they decide to do it or they decide not to. It looks like he has gotten to the limit of what they’re willing to throw in. So the alternative is crossing the street and looking for a better deal.

I can’t believe this thread is still going on. It’s very simple. The dealership has no way to get reimbursed for the work by BMW by just doing an upgrade at the customer’s request. Some of these updates can take several hours especially since this is not an interim update coming from iDrive 8.0. If something breaks, or they run into trouble, that’s several hours at the cost of doing business. Like I mentioned earlier, if they do it, it would just be out of courtesy.
You will eventually get it via OTA anyway - maybe even as early as this month which is what BMW announced several months ago. “OTA rollout to 8.5 begins in September…”. It’s also worth noting these are rolling updates, so not everyone will get it at the same time. Not sure what you’re expecting, but the updates are not earth shattering. Your car will still drive when you put it in D or B mode. |

So the dealer agreed to do the upgrade. The bad news is that it I have to schedule an appointment and bring the car back for the upgrade in the next couple of weeks. (No appointment available this coming week.)
Here is the interesting piece of news. I told the sales advisor that I am hearing that the OTA will be pushed out in October, so I might not have to come back. He tells me there was a meeting last week with a Regional Manager who reportedly said that the update is not just a simple download and that they have to bring the cars in and spend 4-5 hours to do the upgrade. When I told him that was not what the BMW press release said, he told me that sometimes the BMW press releases don't always get the story right and that this is a big upgrade. (That makes sense.) It could be BMW didn't understand the difficulty in the upgrade when it published the news. It could be this sales associate got the story wrong. I guess we'll all find out in the next couple of weeks. Thanks again for all the input and advice. |
