iDrive 8.5 11/2023.20

Has anyone seen this release in the wild? When I got my car back from being serviced for the two yellow warning messages, this update was on the car.

You’re not going to see a November update via OTA until at least February if not March (March will be the next release after this one). It’s always 3 to 4 months behind unless you go to the dealer.

If you have any type of fault in the vehicle, they will most certainly update software during the visit. The dealer will not update the software at your request unless it can be tied to a warranty claim so they can be reimbursed by BMW for the work.

Got it today. Subjectively seems a lot snappier and smoother. I have manual battery preconditioning now too

Came back from the dealership today with 11/2023.20 installed. It was getting serviced after my iX completely bricked itself (stuck on BMW logo issue). I made a straight jump from 03/2023 (iDrive 8) so I’m noticing all the iDrive 8.5 stuff now. Has anyone found what else is new or any release notes with this November release?

Hi!
2 questions:

- if you skip the OTA update can you install newer version? Or they should be installed one by one?
- is the OTA update 100% the same as if you do it at the dealership? Dealer told me that OTA update covers only major issues and if you do it with them it's more sophisticated

Thanks!

I haven’t found the release notes, but so far no complaints.

OTA updates have generally been the same OS versions that dealers install. The biggest difference is that OTA lags by at least 3 months after dealers get them to install in the shop. What I’m not totally sure of is whether the OTA updates also code the individual modules outside of the HU. My understanding is they do but would be good to confirm. hugo_nz any insight?

An RSU updates all applicable modules. You can’t just update to a higher I level by only coding one module. The whole vehicle will be brought up to said I level.

Mine was in for service and it has this software now. I did notice the font change and the improved messaging on heads up
