M Technology Pack on i4
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Anyone else noticed this?? So frustrating... might just have to order the 20"s and buy more narrow tyres for the wheels. The pack detail: ....features increased heat capacity of the braking system and the cooling system that guarantees a long-lasting high performance under extreme driving conditions (similar to motorsport) (especially in combination with high outside temperatures). Includes upgrades for the drive train cooling system and the M Sport braking system. Available with 20" 868 M Double-spoke Bi-colour Alloy Wheels on the M50 model.

Brakes probably don't clear the smaller wheels. Not uncommon.

I'm not sure what the cooling is. I suspect this might be sadly a cut and paste from the MTech pack on other cars where there is an additional oil cooler. I've not seen anything on battery cooling.

I guess "Includes upgrades for the drive train cooling system" means battery cooling.

Thanks - that's good to know, although I now want the larger brakes

seems like this package was recently renamed....now it's called "high performance tire package"...at least in the US.
The brakes should be the same as the M340/M440i, which are M-sport brakes but not as large as the M-performance accessory brakes.

The M Technology package brakes are the same as the M Performance brakes -up-sized calipers, 374mm rotors- except that the M Performance rotors are dimpled and slotted.

The larger brakes could possibly be the other reason why going from 18 to 19" wheels is seems to only be a 25 mile range hit on the edrive40, but going from 19 to 20" is almost double the range hit on the M50 because of the heavier brake hardware.

Wider, stickier, heavier tires probably cause most of the drop when going to the 20" wheels. Brake weight has little impact on fuel economy since it's all closer to the hub. Calipers aren't spinning, too. The wheel and tire weight matter more. I guess it all adds up.
The new text on the US website is: "High Performance Tire Package $2,500 Enhance the aggressive appeal of your vehicle with a body-colored rear spoiler, increased braking capacity for extreme driving conditions, and wheel arch moldings on the rear axle. Also included are wider, high-performance tires offering improved traction, reduced stopping distance and enhanced dynamic response." Nothing about cooling anymore. So is 2500 worth it for upgraded calipers and massively upgraded wheels and tires? If you want better handling, I'm guessing a huge yes. Braking doesn't matter so much because it's an EV, but extra capacity is a good thing. |

My mileage requirement is 250 so anything extra is a plus. Also I suspect in Eco mode mileage will be better. I think, and don't quote me, the front motor is not engaged for drive in Eco mode. Since it also doesn't have permanent magnets it should freewheel with out a lot of losses.

M Technology package Increased capacity of the braking system for improved performance under extreme driving conditions, particularly when driving in very high temperatures. Doesn't mention cooling per se, but it does say improved braking under high temperatures.
