Towing a small boat (2000 - 4000lbs) with a X5

Hello Gents,

I have a 2017 X5 35i (all wheel drive). When I checked the factory specs I saw it was capable of towing up to 6000lbs. I installed a hitch which is rated for that and then some.

I wanted to know if any of you all have towed a small boat 18-25ft and what your experience has been?

Thank you all in advance for your help

I tow my 20ft deck boat, it is over 5k lbs w/ the trailer with my 2011 X5 E70 Deleted Diesel. I removed the brakes from the trailer as they were annoying. I am sure you will be fine.

It is a bit sketchy the 1st few times but you will get the hang of it(I am assuming you are not used to towing).

Thanks for the reply. I am not used to it. I noticed you said you had a diesel. That's awesome. I am sure the diesel has more torque than my gas Xdrive35. Do you know what the diesel is rated for as far as towing? Hopefully the X35 can pull it as well.

Thanks again for your input!

I believe it is 6k lbs as well. I was semi concerned as I was a bit over 5k with the boat and trailer. The diesel does have lots of low end tq but I am sure the gas motor will do just fine.

I believe the towing capacity has more to do with safety then 'can the motor handle it' Is the suspension and frame able to take the stress, are the brakes ample enough, can the transmission take the stress etc. The motor will be just fine IMO.

Honestly it feels like I could tow something much heavier, again, I even removed the brakes from the trailer and have no issues braking or accelerating etc. Now that being said, I am not going to exceed the 6k towing limit. If I need to tow more I will rent a truck for the day or go buy one.
