Can I just add that maybe this car isnt made to compete.

Maybe its their vision for when petrol runs out - maybe they arent trying to make a hybrid seller for decades.

Maybe they are saying " petrol is gonna run out, so lets design a platform for us to push new technologies and ideas. Lets put it into a package that exudes what BMW stands for. Yes we will make mistake, but hopefully in the future we shall be at the forfront of the electric race"

Or they could just be trying to copy tesla and Prisuses. I for one dont think electrical cars are the future, I think hydrogen needs to be used. However there needs to be big pushes in changing peoples view point.

We are so used to gas, we need products like this to tempt us into different fields.

Also I agree that there should be proper angel lights (ala concept) and please show me more of the laser light stuff - this is all I could find - seems it would be illegal in a lot of countries!

Also you know there is gonna be a Spyder version - and I think that will fix the ugly back on this car (hmm where would u put the roof? - no more passengers in the bacl).

It does look good in black. Blue is nice too. I wonder if the black and blue is a message to your wallet from BMW

That black door panel upon stepping in will be VERY prone to scratching I think.

Car looks sexy, however far from being a beauty and a beast. Not thrilled about the performance with that price tag, but then again not everyone is about performance.

In the US where gas is still relatively cheap, I don't see the point in this car. There are much better performing cars for the money. You either need to be a true tree hugger or just want it for just some status symbol.

I could see this working much better in other countries.

People who have that kind of money to spend $135K base + on a car won't care too much on fuel Econ. Also, they wouldn't drive a super car type as a daily driver. At least thats what I've seen. SO why have high fuel econ when a car like the i8 will likely not get driven as much?

Audi understands that and thats why even the next gen R8 will still have the same 2 engines (V8 and Lambo V10) but with cylinder deactivation, start stop etc just to try to be a little more efficient

BMW , I wish you made/make a proper super car I would buy it! Mercedes has a couple of super cars, Audi has one too.

I think i8 is heavily focused on euro markets which have strict emission requirements etc

I think The concept of the i8 is just boring, no offence to anyone. Also a lot of its power comes from the electric motor which does not have a long range. So really you're drivng a 1.5 Litre 3 Cyl "Super" car with 236 Hp.

At least Audi is coming up with the r8 e-tron, a fully electric car with a ton of performance and range

Disclaimer: I hate Audi's other than the R8
I think this is an utterly subjective thing. Don't get me wrong, I admire the design and performance of the R8 as well as its segment marketing. For the SLS, not so much. Why would I be spending over 200K but not getting a Horse or a Bull (Ferrari/Lambo?) But again, it's a complete personal view. I am assuming BMW is doing this i project for many reasons, some come from the government, some for its own aspect. BMW hopes to investigate and explore the world of hybrid without sacrificing the performance (same as what Porsche is doing with the 918, for instance). And you have no idea how many times in the REAL world that supercar owners have told that the same things over and over again: they wish their cars can hold more than just 2 people; they wish they can drive their gorgeous vehicles to work on a daily basis (why not, really) but dragging around a v10/v12 in town every single damn day is just not practical. Plus I love the pricing, not an ultra-luxury car but certainly very well refined. The only small let down I guess is the accelaration, I was expecting at least under 4 sec 0-60 (consider a 2.8 for 918 Spyder); but again, the i8 is much better on the eyes and can hold 2 more adults. I like the i concept, all in all, but don't get me started on the F30 steering and the way that BMW is heading in the lower segments.

Please name a car that can do 0-60 in 4.4 (similar or better), with doors opened up, 94 mpg, hold 4 adults, sturdy carbon fiber chassis all around and similar price tag?

none because if you want to buy a sport car for that price you buy a Porsche, if you want good mileage you don't search for a sport car that costs 136k and 4 adults on a coupe is a thing not needed.

Thank you for posting these! I was worried that the blue accents were going to be on every car. Hopefully most people will not order these as they really make the car look juvenile.

Stunning in black. Do people ve to sit through a power point presentation on how to use prior to purchase? It's gonna find its market that's for sure.
How about this body fitted with a NA M division engine?

The Spyder version is coming to the i8 .

Once again the same nonsense, V8 , V10 Supercar blah , blah .
The i8 will not crossover to BMW M. Its genes will benefit BMW M.
We have proven we do not need a Supercar at this time and the new M4 will further that statement. In a world where our competitors are electrifying existing concepts BMW have proved to be more innovative and more creative in their choices.
I have watched some of our competitors completely scrutinise both the i3 and i8 this afternoon and they are concerned , really concerned.
One abandoned this idea in favour of an electrified current sports car that will not make production and both are quite distant from the benefits of mass volume CFRP in a volume production model.

In 2 years time the all new BMW 7er which heralds an all new aluminium,CFRP mix architecture , CFRP body panels and high tech driver and passenger HUDs using the latest ConnectedDrive innovations will be the most technically advanced production BMW ever.

Today is more than a special day , its a day that BMWs leadership has effectively transformed the perspective of mobility. Today everybody shows where the market is at .

BMW want to show you where it's going...

Great perspective, Scott, thanks.

Love the car drooling over all the photos. Looks great.

My only nit pick would be as a few others mentioned the angel eyes of the concept were cool as hell. But still, I love this car.

It absolutely can be a daily driver, I think that's the whole point of it. I would daily the crap out of this car.

What do the things in bold have to do with better performing cars for less money. There is a list of cars I would personally would rather have. Oh and 4 adults, that would be a squeeze at best. This car makes more sense in other countries where there are tighter regulations. In the US it is a status symbol.
