still naturally aspirated?

so how is that lexus continues to produce a hunking 3.5 litre naturally aspirated v6 motor in a mass produced car whereas BMW is relegated to producing all turbo engines?

It must be european emissions regulations...

I miss the wonderful naturally aspirated inline bmw sixes...at least you can still get a naturally aspirated big v6 in the lexus

if they pair that naturally aspirated v6 with a manual and retain the rwd I would be all over that...despite the mediocre looks

Lexus continues to built them because Toyota doesn't like to spend on R&D. BMW doesn't use them because the ultimate driving machine and slowest in class don't go well in the same sentence. Lots of cheaper FWD vehicles will do 0-60 mph as fast or faster than 5.5 seconds;

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...y-the-numbers/

Maybe you would be all over a BMW like this but most people would snicker at the weak engine relative to what other automakers offer in the price range. Lexus gets by due to it's reputation of reliability not cutting edge tech and performance. BMW cannot succeed offering dated products like this.

Okay, this IS refresh was lazy, but now they've really dropped the ball. Rumor has it the LC F is cancelled. https://www.autoevolution.com/news/t...ed-145198.html

Yeah and they'll put in one of their boring products like an SUV, rather than their best looking and coolest car they've introduced in years...

The 2-IS refresh with the LEDs looked so clean and timeless. I have the non-F sport model in black and it's such a pleasure to look back at.

I don't even understand how Lexus has any enthusiasts. They don't make any fun vehicles and there's nothing in the pipeline either. One of my buddies is considering ditching his fanboy status.

Don’t fool yourself, the torque is miles different. Those high strung v6s have to rev super high to make any torque, plus the whp/wt (actual dyno) figures are better, but it’s the torque curve that’s the biggest difference.

I thought they were both mid 13 second cars? I use to have a IS350 and I was running low 13s all day on the drag strip.

Torque less but no slouch.

I will say the Lexus forums are pretty much dead. The IS and GS sections have a handful of enthusiasts that mod, but it's a ghost town over there. The one thing that I will say about the two that I've owned is that they are pretty much service free vehicles. Tires, oil and brakes are all I've ever had to spend on mine. Aside from the looks of the current ride, it's a pretty boring car unless being driven in sport +. Driving in sport + will drain the tank damn fast.

I bought my IS last May and sold my E93. The difference in torque is night and day. I will say that the 8 speed transmission at high speed is enjoyable. Being able to cruise at 120-130 and still have a ton of pedal left and paddle shifters in sport + is pretty damn fun. Just when you think you have it tapped out it just continues to pull. It may not be fast from the launch, but at speed, it will surprise you. Still a boring car though.

Other thoughts on the current IS: It's extremely quiet. Some of my friends make fun of how quiet it really is. The pro to this is a quiet ride on the inside and when I do decide to get on it, I'm not drawing attention to myself with a loud exhaust. The suspension is pretty stiff and extremely stiff in sport +. Enjoyable but has no soul. Reliable yes, but no means considered a fast car. It seems like the gen3's were slowed down from the gen2's. In order to get the same speed out of the gen3 that was normal out of the gen2's, you have to put it in sport +.

Not even close. Whereas the IS350 actually DOES have 311hp, the 340i is underrated at 320hp. Also, my ZHP has 355hp which I am sure is actually more and this car is WAY faster than my IS350 was.

Toyota stopped giving a damn about the enthusiast community for some time now. And in that time and as of April 2020, Toyota is the #1 auto manufacturer in the world with 12.6% of the world's market share. VW Group is 2nd with 11.2%. That's amazing considering that the VW Group includes big names like Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini and others, while Toyota is essentially just Toyota and Lexus.

So we enthusiasts can put down Toyota, call their cars boring with outdated technology, but they are #1 in the world, bottom line. And if you are wondering why BMW has been softening their cars and ignoring enthusiasts more and more, you can look at Toyota's success to understand why.

Even more so in the current 340i which is rated at 382 hp (I think that's the official number). Based on the loaner car that I had, I feel even that number is underrated.

Side note: a joke among my friends is that Lexus is only reliable because it's user base never uses more than 10% of the motor's rated output.

IS-F runs mid 13s. A stock IS350 is a 14 sec car.
They only make about 260rwhp while stock 340is run 330rwhp.

Countless people bemoaning Toyota's decision to carry-over the GR series V6 which on paper has competitive stats... and yet no mention of the reliability issues of the N54, N55, etc. engines that BMW used in the 3-series, or the costs related to those that are borne by owners.

A GR-series V6 will need only basic maintenance (oil changes, plugs, filters) and fuel to run to 300,000km. How many BMW engines can even come close to that level of reliability? Lexus/Toyota customers want that reliability, and don't care so much about 0-60 times or overall HP number, compared to BMW drivers who are more obsessed with stats and tolerate more frequent visits to the service department and out-of-warranty repair costs.

Not true. The RAV actually came to market with a new engine, transmission, differential, and on an entirely new platform. The engine stats remained the same (2.5L 2AR to 2.5L A25A) but it's a different engine with better tech. Transmission went from 6 speed to 8 speed. And the rear diff has torque vectoring.

The problem with the car enthusiast crowd is that we grossly over-estimate our importance to the car industry and live in a bubble where we think we know more than the hundreds of people who work for these companies and whose life's work is figuring out how to sell the most cars possible...

The N54 and N55 are no longer made... the B58 is... which is borderline bulletproof and has cooling, performance and refinement that Lexus could dream of... and by no means is that motor competitive vs the GR V6... it makes another 80hp and 1.5 x the torque at a lower rpm... even better questions... who keeps their Lexus these days to 200K miles... judging by the ones on cars.com very few.

Road and Track have different numbers for the IS350.

0-60 4.9 seconds
1/4 mile 13.5@103.1

Motortrend for the IS-F.

12.9 seconds at 111.4 mph

My timeslips for IS350. 13.3@103.2MPH
