Feedback on Tires

Looking at the cars on the various lots. I see some have Pirelli's and others have Bridgestones.

What are the views of each?

There’s two different types of Pirelli tires: performance and high-performance. For whatever reason, you can only get the high-performance tires on the 22” black wheels with bronze accents. Visually they look almost identical except for the Roman numeral one circled in red down below. I’ve been very happy with mine and would purchase them again. They are super sticky (high-performance). These are the model 1023 wheels by the way.

These are extremely heavy vehicles, so there are a lot of complaints about the mileage you’ll get out of these and many of the other tire options. I drive very little, so it’s really insignificant to me. Don’t expect these to last for 15,000 miles on a near 6,000 lb. Vehicle – especially if you have a heavy foot.

Along the same lines, does anyone know if BMW cares on lease turn in that you have AS tires instead of Summer Tires as long as they’re the same 107Y rating (or better)? There are some Pilot Sport AS ones I’m eyeing as a replacement once my Bridgestones go.

As far as the current Bridgestones, on both cars they are fine. Not enough miles to know how long they’ll last. But they’re quiet and handle fine.

I honestly don’t think they look that closely. To a dealer, tires are tires as long as there’s tread when you turn it in.

The OEM Pirelli I have are tread wear rating of 280 I think. That won’t last long on any car. For comparison, I just put some Bridgestone WeatherPeak tires on my mom’s car that have a tread wear rating of 700. An Alenza Plus has a rating of 800.

Of course summer performance tires are all in the 280-320 tread wear range. Even just going to a performance leaning all season will get you around 500, so it’s a trade off.

Yep. Most dealers don't care what tires are on the vehicle at lease return as long as 1) they are the same size as the OEMs, and 2) they have still a good tread depth.

If you can get Michelin All Season, that would be the best choice for long last tires. Keep in mind, due the weight of EV, tread wears out faster.

Yeah, I figured I’d need tires in less than a year. On my X5 my wife would go through tires every 12k miles. I expect with the added weight and power of the M60 it would be worse…

Amazingly enough having a square setup helps with rotations and they’re not that expensive. The X5 Michelins were 2800 a set. A full set for the M60 seems to be about 1400.

That all depends on the tire size. The summer performance and high-performance tires will cost around 2K for a full set on 22s.

Coming from a Tesla where one must evaluate tires based on their ability to compensate for a poorly tuned suspension, I am very pleased with how the iX feels on summer performance tires. Smooth as silk and very well damped. This is the #1 area of dissatisfaction among those in my Tesla group. I can't tell you how many end up getting rid of their 21" wheels for 19" due to the roughness of the suspension. Teslas ride like a semi-truck. Many in the Tesla community must also avoid performance tires because of the rough ride, which on the iX is butter smooth.

Going to immediately upon getting our iX M60 with 22’”s, change them out for Michelin Pilot Sports All Season 4’s (arriving just before Christmas). Going to see if I can save the OE ones for use toward the end of my three year lease time so that when I turn the car, still have enough tread left of them to meet the inspection requirement. My dealer warned me that lease turn in inspections are getting stricter.

Not sure what wheels you went with, but if you happen to get the 1023 wheels with the bronze accents and high-performance tires (not the regular performance), I’d consider buying them from you just to have a backup set.

If they don’t have the Roman numeral one before the word ELECT, then they are the regular performance tires.

Thanks. However while mine are coming with those wheels, not with the HP summer tires. Good luck on your quest.

I only have 2,500 miles on my vehicle, so I don’t need them anytime soon.

I’m doing the same thing, swapping out my 22” summers for PSAS4 before late fall. I took delivery a month ago and plan to swap out around Nov. I’ll store the summers until lease return/lease swap, and then re-mount.
I’m doing the same for my i4 M50, but plan to sell the summer rubber as I didn’t lease that car.

PSA: If you’re a BMWCCA member you can get 15% off all Michelin tires before the end of the year.

That’s a pro move to go to the PSAS4’s immediately. OE’s suck.

I still got 60% tread and I’m at 28k on my daily set of NT421Q (36k overall) and I push it hard. Very curious as to tread life for the PSAS4’s.

How are you guys finding the range / noise with the PS4 AS's?

I ended up going with Conti DWS06 bc PS4 AS were backordered at the time. They seem to be holding up well regarding noise/range; however, iX is my wife’s car. I’ve always been a fan of the DWS

No difference in range after tire break-in period. Noise is reduced from the OEM Pirelli P-Zero performance tires and the ride is more comfortable. It's a win-win for me. The tires do tramline quite a bit on grooved pavement so keep that in mind.

Thanks. We dont have grooved pavement up here in New England, so that’s good!

Let’s be honest, we barely have what passes as pavement in many areas in NE
