Newbie here, and I have been bitten by the i8 bug

I had been looking to move out of my M-B CLA45 AMG to either a Maserati GT or a Porsche 911 Coupe or Convert but after driving past an i8 a couple of weeks ago, I am truly in love.

I have noticed that pricing has been all over the place for preowned 14s and 15s. I am OK with playing the waiting game until fall as I am looking for a sub $100k car.

Any advice when looking for a preowned i8?

Thanks,
Nick

I previously had a Lotus Evora and a Porsche Cayman S, but I have not been as drawn to a car like the i8.

Just get a new one under current lease term with $1200+ monthly - drive it for 2-3 years and get another one - depreciation on even a used i8 will be huge - plus getting new battery after 7 years - will wipe all benefit of owning one.

Rocke29 - welcome! We've all been bitten by the same bug, and I couldn't be happier with the car, despite some of the shortcomings in daily driving, like a tiny trunk.

Mikenyc - 7 years wouldn't be so bad; the warranty on the battery is 8 years. Of course, the jury is still out on how the battery performs long-term. I've had mine for 16 months now, and no sign of deterioration.

even at 8 years paying 8-9+K to replace one will be a killer

I have driven many cars from different brands ,none of them has given me what I8 offers.Yes, there are shortcomings as Aye-Eight had but you can use the rear seats as a trunk as well .
I trust you may find a car withing your budget

I was cross-shopping the 911 as well.

Purely from a driver's car point of view, the 911 probably wins.

But for me, the i8 wins almost everything else. More exotic, cool tech (electric/gas engines), the vertical doors, the dual driving personalities.

The 911 and i8 are quite different but I think one of the reasons they are often cross-shopped is they are the only two high end sports cars with a back seat. I know there are "coupes" but I feel like they are in a different category (although there are nice coupes out there as well).

I just left the dealer, took a test drive and offered me the following lease on a 2016 with the laser light option

12k miles
8000 down
$1499/mo

Thoughts?

I hate leasing and think I can do better...
I will probably go with a preowned under $100k (if I can find one)

Definitely going with preowned. I have a number of dealers "trying" to get to my magic number of $100k and not completely lowball me on my CLA45 trade.

Good luck I am in same boat. >10k/year depreciation is a lot to swallow, plus insurance and personal property tax. Love the car though.

Let's also not forget, one reason I'm cross shopping with a 90k M3, the ability to put 2 car seats in the back! It can truly be a comfortable daily driver and potentially a menace on th me track (if fully charged).

I'm personally waiting a longer duration battery coupled to a higher performance model.

If you read around in the other thread, you can probably do a little better. One guy is quoting $1200 a month with nothing down!
