Car & Driver: BMW i4 eDrive40 review & performance / range stats

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Overall pretty favorable:

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...y-the-numbers/

Constant 75mph range: 280 miles, and in mixed driving surpassed EPA's 99MPGe at 108MPGe

0-60: 4.8
1/4 mile: 13.4@106mph
30-50mph passing: 2.0
50-70mph passing: 2.9
300ft skidpad: .87g

Highs: Longer range than the M50, well-controlled ride, attractive and intuitive curved display screen

Lows: Not crazy fast like the M50, rear-only regen can make the friction brakes feel grabby

Some quotes:

"The single-motor i4 is sufficiently quick."

"Both suspension setups feel engaging and well controlled"

"...as it ingested all manner of road imperfections with aplomb and pasted a huge grin on our face when we pushed it hard in the mountains."

"We also found its steering to be accurate and predictable..."

Even better, that's with 19" performance rubber, so an M50 with similar wheels ought to get its 270 EPA range at 75MPH.

So, they could make a nice rear door that flows with the rear fender, but they could not do that for the mighty M3…

It’s built off the 4 series gran coupe right? The M3 is built off the standard 4 series. The gran coupe is 6 inches longer with more room for the rear doors. I for one would not have wanted to pay a premium for bmw designing m3 specific rear doors as someone that actually ordered one

As much as I am not a fan of the buck tooth grill, everything else about the 40 makes sense for a daily driver.

The lack of AWD will hurt 40e sales in the Northeast, especially for those who don't want M50 performance or pricing.

The xDrive40 is coming in November to fix that.

I drove at the Ultimate driving experience the m50 expecting heavy and hard to control and found the opposite. It was surprisingly nimble and decisive in cornering.

I had an extensive test drive in March and found the M50 hides it weight very well.
It doesn't feel, handle or behave like a 2 ton car at speeds where you keep your license. Ifmyounstart acting like a hooligan then youight feel it.

I would say at anything under 9/10 you are never going to think it's a heavy car.

Isn't 0-60 in 4.8s significantly faster than announced?

That's the first time I've heard somebody say this. The ICE M440 at UDE last year was already heavy cumbersome as it was. You're saying the EV version, which is considerable heavier, was nimble? Every i4 M50 (and M440) review has also stated this car is competent but no handling champ.

Anyhow, I think this is a solid enough EV effort by BMW. It's much heavier than the Model 3, but I'd venture to bet that nobody buying a Model 3 knows or cares about weight. I hope BMW is able to poach some customers back.

I'd agree the i4 M50 is much better in the UDE course than the M440i as well. Having all of the weight of the battery down low really lowers the center of gravity and makes the M440i feel floaty in comparison. Handling champion is all relative here- really push it and you can certainly feel the weight. At higher speeds it will be harder to hide that weight as well.

Certainly a fair point.

It's actually good to see how great the i4 is despite the huge skepticism and doubt people had - BMW is late, no dedicated platform, dead on arrival. I don't think the i4 could have been any better as the first of its kind for BMW. You really feel like they maximized and did the best they can with this platform and how their business is positioned between ICE transitioning to EV.

The i4 for some reason has less room in the rear seats than the m3, the door opening is also smaller, strange.

BMW is no late, does have a dedicated EV platform, and is no dead on arrival.

BMW have been building electric cars since 2009, full production since 2014, and the first (and only) manufacturer with a dedicated EV platform in carbon fiber.

The i4 is a management, engineering, and sales decision, and it works extremely well as such.

so the EDrive XDrive 40 will be here in November? before all the pending orders for the Edrive40's in backlog? To get it here in November orders would have to be placed and schedule for production , I don't know.... is speculation or you have inside information that the EdriveXdrive40 will be in US in November?

I wouldn't compare the handling to the M2s or M4 comps,. But I can squarely say that it doesn't feel like an over ballasted cargo ship either. I was pleasantly surprised.
