wining noise in 1st gear when driving slow
Hello,
I own a E90/330i, manual. When driving real slow in 1st gear (f.i. on a parking lot) i hear a wining noise. Is this normal? I don't know for sure if 'wining' is the right word (I am Dutch) but the sound can be compared with the sound from most cars when driving in reverse with some speed on a straight road. Alex. |

hello. there is another thread of people reporting the same problem. actually it was myself(325 auto, and another of the same) so we thought it might just be from autos. but apperantly its happening in sticks also. Most people in that thread are saying its "normal". i personally think that my bmw should be much quieter in the cabin

I'm pretty sure that this is normal, because I've heard this sound in other BMW's. I actually turn off my stereo sometimes just to listen to the various engine sounds. To me, the "whining" sound is very cool, and reminds me of a sound that you might hear in a supercar. (It may come from the transmission but I don't really know). -Patrick |

As quite a few of you would know from my many previous posts, I used to have a manual e46 323i (which I traded in for my e90) that exhibited the initial whining sound just as the car took off in 1st gear. This was very quickly ovetaken by the glorious melodical (is that a word?) note of the true engine sound.
I have this exact sound change in my new e90 325. A little whining followed by the wonderful engine note, albeit more muted than the e46. I love the sounds and it is quite normal and standard with BMW cars. Same deal applied to my even older e36 320i.

I am not totally convined we are talking about the same noise. The noise I hear is not constant. It's frequency varies with speed and - when record - the noise would present as a wave...
